Former police officer involved in controversial shooting may be reinstated

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — A former Fort Pierce police officer involved in a controversial shooting may soon be back on the force with back pay and benefits.

The City of Fort Pierce fired Sergeant Brian MacNaught in May 2017 for having an unauthorized body camera the night 21-year-old DeMarcus Semer, an unarmed black man, was shot and killed.

However, a St. Lucie County Grand Jury did not indict MacNaught and Officer Ralph Holmes in the shooting incident in 2016. Records indicate both officers shot at Semer that night.

On Wednesday, the Coastal Florida Police Benevolent Association, a union, won in arbitration against the city on behalf of MacNaught.

The details of the arbitration were released in a memo from Assistant City Attorney Iola T. Mosley, Sr. to City Manager Nicholas C. Mimma,
