I know a few people with PhD s and none of them insist on being called Dr in any setting outside of their place of work and some not even then.

There are many college professors who have doctorates and I got used to referring to them as "Doctor" when I spoke with them as did everybody else. In an educational setting, it is the norm and that pre-fix stays with them for life.
Of course, I wouldn't expect you to know about this.

This is such a petty bit of imbecility. It has long been a custom for a person who has a doctorate to be referred to with the "Dr." honorific. The professors under whom I have studied have all been referred to this way when they had a doctorate. Where did this idiot come up with this idea?
