Jimmy Carter is a democrat and he has stated quite clearly that we no longer have a functioning democracy. Been to Sweden have we?

Switzerland, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, the U.K., France, Japan, Peru, Chile, Canada and the Baja in Mexico to name a few.

And if you ask THOSE people in those countries above if they think America is free they would qualify their answer by saying that we are shackled by our health care system because they do not lose their home in the event of a catastrophic illness or have to file bankruptcy.

Freedom is a relative term depending on what you have or don't have as infrastructure within your society.

Not only is America a free country, but all Americans enjoy greater freedom today than at any time in this great Nation’s history.

There’s more work to do, of course, as we strive to overcome the fear and ignorance of conservative reactionaries; but the best America is yet to come.

And transgender Americans are starting their struggle to realize their right to individual liberty.

But as American society continues to grow more diverse and inclusive, every citizen will at last enjoy the freedom and liberty that are indeed his civil rights.

Provided those civil rights are en vogue at the moment. I have a clearly spelled out right to keep and bear arms...but I have to jump through hoops to exercise. I have a right to free speech...that is being more and more restricted thanks to thinks like "Free Speech Zones". I have a right to have my home and papers secure and a jury trial...provided I'm not subject to a secret trial.

What do you mean they have a higher standard of living? Based on what metrics? Finland, Sweden and Holland all have lower GDP per capita than the US. In fact almost all of Europe has lower GDP per capita than the US, with the exceptions being Norway - a country of 5 million with massive offshore oil deposits - and Switzerland, though it depends on which methodology one uses. Virtually every country that has a higher standard of living than the US is either a small city state, i.e. Singapore, Hong Kong, or has a small population with enormous amounts of oil.
