Imagine you are suddenly homeless......

no job
no family
clean slate... what would you do to survive and start over?
I was homeless briefly as a teenager. This was back in the 70's and I lived in Hawaii at the time. I didn't have to worry about freezing to death. I owned an old beater station wagon that I slept in. I would go to a labor services office at 4:30AM or so and try to get day labor work doing physical tasks like unloading trucks. That kept me with enough food and gas to get by. I'd buy a loaf of bread and some dry salami or peanut butter. I showered at the beach. I did my laundry once a week at a laundromat. Didn't have many clothes to worry about. I went to night school to get my GED, it was free. Once I got my GED, I joined the Navy. Since then, I've been steadily employed except for a few months here or there between jobs. I did live in a tent in my in-law's back yard for a couple months until I found a job and got an apartment for me and my family.

Now I'm 60. If I had to face homelessness again, I'd have a much harder time of it than I did as a teenager. I'm not physically able to do labor intensive work any more. I'm an Engineer, so I would try to find work as a technical contractor. Most businesses I've seen don't want to hire old people. I'm not quite at Social Security age yet, but my wife gets benefits. We would probably have to rent a cheap apartment and stretch our savings as much as possible. That's all pretty much academic at this point though.

It would be harder if you were older. Most people have family, somewhere, that would help them, but, I think many just think they can ride it out and then get "stuck" being homeless

There are so many various reasons/situations.... I should try to read up on it.... I'd love to know the statistics....

Dipshit #2 goes completely 'nannas and forgets the implications: where to get horizontal and unconscious in between his Superman imitations.

SeaGal in post #8 jumps immediately into the Masonic boy-scout template, and kisses the theologian's and state agent's rump and ring. The Catholic mafia gets in line early to receive government funding so that it can double the charity pathology.

I live in the tropics( Not fucking Hawaii--shit stain) for this very reason.
Homeless means I may need to steal a mosquito net and some candles( or old inner tube) to start fires
Bath ?

If you are retired and your loved ones have passed and you rely on Social Security and Medicare and you spent your money raising a family and paying into government programs the Republicans want to destroy, there is no "starting over". You are fuked. And that is just what the GOP wants. They want you to get it over with and just die. Their policies tell us.
Suppose you are a veteran. So what. They have no respect for veterans. They elected a man who dissed war heroes, people whose children have died in combat and POW's.

Republicans gleefully do everything they can to destroy your life while insisting they are the "moral" ones.

okay so I potentially faced this situation (but didn't) but gave it a lot of thought.
Granted, I wanted to not be found, so, different kind of a story, but, I did think about it as a better alternative than my current living conditions

If I could not be employed, I suppose I would look for all the local resources to help me get established again. I would start at a city hall or office and go from there asking for help.

I'm assuming here you are an able bodied citizen. But, even if you are not and have health needs, I would still pursue the same avenue.

In the meantime, I would seek water and food where ever it was available. There are MANY people that would gladly buy you food, especially in liberal towns (normally college towns), and that's not even including food banks etc.

I would seek shelter alternately between public library, hospitals, airports, bus terminals and/or casinos if available.
A few years ago, I saw a quadriplegic driving his wheel chair with his mouth, fully dressed in a suit, heading to his workplace. He could of been fully funded by the government as a welfare recipient, but instead he took his skills and knowledge to be fully self sufficient. People like that are the reason why I wanted to be a successful business owner, for if they can overcome their disabilities, anyone can, if they aren't a lazy ass liberal.

People like that inspire me

Hey, if you're out in the cold and rain, and listening to some preacher is your ticket to a hot meal and a cot - you fucking take it.

How do you know that he wasn't a liberal, riding in a converted wheelchair donated by a liberal charity institution, on his way to work at a job made possible by the liberal Americans with Disabilities Act? If it were up to fascist bastards like you, he would most likely be dead.
