They always claim that bullcrap about taxpayer money. This started with the elderly who couldn't afford phone service, the phone companies actually give them the device with limited service.

I remember hearing about a senior citizen who froze to death because he couldn't afford to pay the electric bill, I'm sure there are many other examples. Everyone should be afforded the most basic needs like a phone, heat, food, etc.

The Republicans can take some of those corporate give aways to pay for it.

Everyone who pays a phone bill pays a Universal Service Fee. That fee is what pays for the free phones.

So the cost does come out of our pockets.

Did an industry group (cell phone manufacturers and/or service providers) get their lobbyists to get this act pushed through Congress? Blame the poor for getting cell phones, but ignore the power behind the throne.

That being said, I could be the last person in America who, although I can afford one, does not have a cell phone. And I never will have a cell phone. I think that cell phones turn people into dicks. They text while driving, they ignore face to face contact when that phone rings, they interrupt movies and concerts. I saw a girl answer her cell phone and carry on with a pleasant conversation at a funeral home while standing before the casket.

As my sainted Pop used to say as he watched people ignore one another in a restaurant while chatting on the cell phone, "What the hell do they have to talk about that could be more pressing than their own dinner guest?"

The Patrick administration decided last month to funnel an additional $30,000 to the nearly $400,000 annual car ownership program.

The program, which is provided by the State Department of Transitional Assistance, gives out about 65 cars a year​

The state pays for the car’s insurance, inspection, excise tax, title, registration, repairs and a AAA membership for one year at a total cost of roughly $6,000 per car.​
