American culture is very pluralistic and becoming more so. There are over 300 language spoke in the US and there are communities of almost every ethnic group that exist on the planet. It may seem that the various ethnicities are not being assimilated but the fact is they are. It just takes a long time.

To understand cultural assimilation, you have to look at ethnicity, not just religion. A Muslim is a follower of Islam just as a Catholic is follower of the Catholic faith. Muslim is not an ethnicity. Almost every ethnic groups include Muslims. Thus there are Japanese, Arab, English, Indonesian, Indian, Chinese, and Latin American Muslims. Although these people are all Muslims their ethnicity and the Islamic sect they follow vary greatly as does their rate of cultural assimilation.

We are seeing more Muslim today in the US for two big reasons. American culture after WWII spread to every nation on earth making the US one the most desirable places to live particularly in African and Asian countries where there are many Muslims. Secondly, changes in the cultures of these countries and economic improvements has made it possible for these people to either immigrate to the US or to enter the US on work Visas.

If you don't like American demographics now, you'll hate it in 50 years. The US, like other nations, is becoming more and more multicultural because the world is just becoming a smaller and smaller place.

I won't be here in 50 years, and I doubt America as we have come to know it will no longer exist! IF this multiculturalism continues. Teddy was right, you come here to become an American...nothing else!

Well, I think it does. The environment we live in, economic, cultural, and technological is changing must faster than people. In other words cultural assimilation is not much faster than it was fifty years ago but damn near every else is changing much faster thus we see cultural change as slow or nonexistent in relation to our environment. Our judgement of the rate of change is always relative to the environment.

No. The number of new legal permanent residents in 2014 is just over a million. The average yearly number over the last 20 years is 948,000/yr. Our population has grown by 28% since 1990 yet the number of new legal permanent residents is down. If anything legal immigration should be increased.

What we don't need is more illegal immigrants. It is very hard for illegal immigrants to integrate into society. Although they are a good source of cheap labor and are not eligible for most government benefits, they live in poverty with little chance of upward mobility. Other than providing cheap labor they contribute little to the community often becoming involved in criminal activity.

When you go to the east side of Dearborn you can't read the store signs, they're some kind of arabic writing. People in east Dearborn, where the arabs and muslims are, will rent an apartment, then nail a bedroom door shut and rent that room out, come and go via the window. Fordson High school has 3 restrooms for the kids, boys, girls, and muslim girls. That way the muslim girls don't have to pee with the infidels. Rev. Terry Jones came to Dearborn to protest sharia law, and wanted to burn a koran in front of a masque. He was prevented from doing that by the police, but was allowed to speak at a rally by a city office building. I was there for it. Would they have stopped muslims from burning a bible in front of a church? The muslims get along ok because no one bothers them, but they are taking over. They have east Dearborn, and they're spreading.

In small towns in the bible belt, Christian doctrine is constantly finding it's way into public schools. Schools adapt to the local population be it Muslim, Christian, or Jewish.

Assimilation is a two way street. Each culture assimilates parts of the other. However, religion be in Islam, Christianity or Judaism is not assimilated. Christians remain Christians and Muslims remain Muslims.

We should insist that if the immigrant who comes here does in good faith become an American and assimilates himself to us he shall be treated on an exact equality with every one else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed or birth-place or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American and nothing but an American. If he tries to keep segregated with men of his own origin and separated from the rest of America, then he isn't doing his part as an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. . .
