U.S. Is Intensifying a Secret Campaign of Yemen Airstrikes

The Obama administration has intensified the American covert war in Yemen, exploiting a growing power vacuum in the country to strike at militant suspects with armed drones and fighter jets, according to American officials.

The acceleration of the American campaign in recent weeks comes amid a violent conflict in Yemen that has left the government in Sana, a United States ally, struggling to cling to power. Yemeni troops that had been battling militants linked to Al Qaeda in the south have been pulled back to the capital, and American officials see the strikes as one of the few options to keep the militants from consolidating power.

On Friday, American jets killed Abu Ali al-Harithi, a midlevel Qaeda operative, and several other militant suspects in a strike in southern Yemen. According to witnesses, four civilians were also killed in the airstrike. Weeks earlier, drone aircraft fired missiles aimed at Anwar al-Awlaki, the radical American-born cleric who the United States government has tried to kill for more than a year. Mr. Awlaki survived.

The recent operations come after a nearly year-long pause in American airstrikes, which were halted amid concerns that poor intelligence had led to bungled missions and civilian deaths that were undercutting the goals of the secret campaign.

You sure had a fit under Bush.

You whined about how much money it cost, despite the fact Obama spent more on the Stimulus in 4 months than Bush did in seven years on the War on Terror.

But, for some "strange" reasons, you guys are silent on Obama. In FACT, you are all happy he got Bin Laden.

You guys sure you have your talking points straight??

Are you against the War or aren't you?

It couldn't be we were right and you phony liberals were only against the war for political reasons???????????

Noooooooooooooooooooooooo, how could that be!!!!!

Liberals are far too "noble" to do that . . . . . .

How much did Bush spend on the war on terror in 7 years?

Libs always supported the war on terror. Did you see Bush's 88% approval rate in the months after 9-11 and the invasion of Afghanistan? Liberals opposed the strategic blunder of invading Iraq and were proven right.

The Bush wars cost $2 trillion unfunded dollars, Obama spent $800 million on the stimulus. How can you say that is more? Also isn't $800 million spent on public works projects, policemen, firemen and teachers (not to mention $300 million in tax cuts) money better spent than invading a country that is not a threat and sacrificing 4000 American soldiers?

Little-known fact: Obama's failed stimulus program cost more than the Iraq war

The meme is simple: The economy is in a shambles because of Bush's economic policies and his war in Iraq. As American Thinker's Randall Hoven points out, that's the message being peddled by lefties as diverse as former Clinton political strategist James Carville, economist Joseph Stiglitz, and The Nation's Washington editor, Christopher Hayes.

The key point in the mantra is an alleged $3 trillion cost for the war. Well, it was expensive to be sure, in both blood and treasure, but, as Hoven notes, the CBO puts the total cost at $709 billion. To put that figure in the proper context of overall spending since the war began in 2003, Hoven provides this handy CBO chart showing the portion of the annual deficit attributable to the conflict:
moz-screenshot.png
How+much+did+the+Iraq+war+cost.gif

But there is much more to be said of this data and Hoven does an admirable job of summarizing the highlights of such an analysis:

* Obama's stimulus, passed in his first month in office, will cost more than the entire Iraq War -- more than $100 billion (15%) more.

* Just the first two years of Obama's stimulus cost more than the entire cost of the Iraq War under President Bush, or six years of that war.

* Iraq War spending accounted for just 3.2% of all federal spending while it lasted.

* Iraq War spending was not even one quarter of what we spent on Medicare in the same time frame.

* Iraq War spending was not even 15% of the total deficit spending in that time frame. The cumulative deficit, 2003-2010, would have been four-point-something trillion dollars with or without the Iraq War.

* The Iraq War accounts for less than 8% of the federal debt held by the public at the end of 2010 ($9.031 trillion).

* During Bush's Iraq years, 2003-2008, the federal government spent more on education that it did on the Iraq War. (State and local governments spent about ten times more.)

Name any Dem that opposed the war on terror?

Bush had unprecidented support both at home and abroad until he blundered into Iraq. it was the Dems who kept telling Bush to keep his eye on the ball and go to where the terrorists were in Afghanistan and Pakistan. We are doing it now and it is paying off big

No, I'm asking you to name the liberals here who were opposed to the war on terror when Bush was president.
You said you thought ALL the libs here were opposed to the war on terror when Bush was president,

so it shouldn't be hard for you to name names and back up your claim with evidence.

Unless of course you're just trolling again, then you don't need evidence or facts.

1. Those numbers are based on CBO estimates. Are you now acknowledging that the CBO is a reliable source for estimated budget costs?

2. Those numbers count the 288 billion in TAX CUTS that were in the stimulus bill as a COST.
Do you now agree that tax cuts represent a cost? So when someone like me points out that the Bush tax cuts were a COST that added to the deficits,

you agree?

Let's establish your positions on those 2 issues, if you want to have a serious debate here.

You whined about how much money it cost, despite the fact Obama spent more on the Stimulus in 4 months than Bush did in seven years on the War on Terror.

Interesting assertion...

Somehow in making this claim you only look at Iraq as the only expenditure on the War on Terror (the one event that had the least impact in the war on terror)

Yet you ignore..
- The War in Afghanistan
- The establishment of the Homeland Security Department
- Money spent on enhancing security at home states
- Enhanced Airport Security (TSA)
- Increases in budget for the CIA and NSA
- Money spent on anti-terror military equipment

Do you even know what the War on terror is?

While we are celebrating the CBO and the huge success of the Stimulus Bill

Obama's Economic Stimulus Program Created Up to 3.3 Million Jobs, CBO Says - Bloomberg

President Barack Obama’s stimulus package may have created or saved as many as 3.3 million jobs last quarter and lowered the unemployment rate by as much as 1.8 percentage points, the Congressional Budget Office said.

The $814 billion program, known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, or ARRA, probably added between 1.7 percent and 4.5 percent to gross domestic product for the three months through June, the nonpartisan agency said in a report issued yesterday.

How can anyone compare spending money on the hugely successful Economic Stimulus Bill to the strategic blunder of the invasion of Iraq?

Well, I have always been opposed to a "war on terror". I believe it is ludicrous to declare "war" on a tactic. Referring to it as a "war" ensures its failure from the start...much like our "war on drugs" is an abysmal failure.

I support law enforcement in response to terrorists. I support small, covert operations, like the one that was designed to capture or kill Osama bin Laden.

So no, I don't support ANY President's "war on terror", but I do support responding to terrorist attacks in an appropriate manner. Invading Iraq was not an appropriate response.

Just an "FYI"...Those CBO costs of the Iraq invasion do not include the interest on the financing of the invasion, nor does it include the astronomical costs of future medical care for the soldiers we sent over there.

How many jobs did the invasion create? The stimulus created 3 million and it saved our economy from the brink of a recession. How did we end up in a recession with no money in our coffers to bounce back from it with? Why, the invasion of Iraq...without it, we would not have needed the stimulus.

Bush's tax cuts didn't help either. Who the hell thinks it is smart to pick a fight in TWO COUNTRIES and CUT taxes?
