This is how to fix America's broken education system.

The first thing you do, is to make people who want to be teachers go and get a PhD degree in Education, and a PhD in SPECIAL EDUCATION (so that they can teach anybody).
And a PhD in the field they want to be specialists in teaching.

The second thing that you do is get control of the classrooms.

The female teachers wear Pant or Skirt Suits, makeup, heels and Hose.
The male teachers wear shoes, and a suit and tie and button down dress shirt.
The students dress the same way.

And have Three teachers per 12 students in each class, Plus a liaison officer dressed like a drill sergeant, to keep order.

No more backpacks.
No more bringing ANYTHING to school OTHER THAN Books, Pencils and Gym Clothes.
No more computers to do school work with and no more calculators.
No more games in the classroom.
No more playground equipment, no more commercial gym equipment and no more pools in school.

The curriculum is...
Math, Science, History, Geography, Civics, Psychology, English, German, Dutch, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian languages, Health, Gym, Home Economics, Woodshop, Industrial Shop, Driver's Education, Art and Music and Performing Arts.

No more "social studies"... it is now Geography, Civics, History, Psychology and Health in separate subjects.

No more just "science" it is divided into Biology and Life Sciences, Geology, Natural History and Evolution, and then Industrial Sciences and Physics.

That's just part of how to fix it.

The first thing you do is privatize it. All of it.

Yup, we need what people "learn", "understand", and perceive as "reality" under corporate state control. Education is just a revenue stream for the substantial people anyway.
Right now, it's just a revenue stream for educrats and the NEA/AFT/AFSCME cartel.

Dear IceMan30 this is all the external changes.

To change internally what went wrong,
OWNERSHIP of schools and success has to belong to the COMMUNITY.

Change that to where people have REPRESENTATION in the programs
they are paying for, and all these other details will take care of themselves!

The first step is to stop the abusive bureaucracy where govt contracts
pay to run programs that don't answer to the communities or taxpayers they are supposed to serve.

Perhaps it shouldn't be for profit.

Education should never be for profit.
Nor should there be "school choice" nor privatization, nor freedom of anything...
It should be governed and standard, and that's it.

one way or another it's going to be for the profit of someone. Right now, it's profiting the people who have irreparably fucked it up.

Better to have people interested in creating a product people want to buy, than the current model of take it or leave it.

Because monopolies have such a grand track record of delivering a quality product at a fair price.

A dickhead calling himself the community should have no say in anything about how schools are operated.
Fuck that !

As far as healthcare and education they do, and the USA sucks in terms of both.
:)

It can't be fixed until parents are allowed the freedom to choose how and where their children will be educated. Until that happens, American kids will continue to be stuffed into the Government-run School Meat Grinder. There's very little hope at this point. We will continue to fall in education.

That's not how we view things in america. There are societies that invest in themselves; insuring they leverage the wealth that society generates in common to benefit society as a whole. We have problems with that conceptually. And then we fantastically convince ourselves that we're so exceptional we'll be globally competitive with society's that invest in educated and healthy populations as well as themselves. We choose to run our society as a colonial wealth extraction enterprise with the unsubstantial people operating as sharecroppers to the aristocracy. So we set up a system whereby we turn our college students into debt peons and a serious illness can quite literally and commonly does wind up with patients losing their homes. And then we call them losers and demean them. The wealthy have taught us to worship them and grovel.
