The repubs will be wandering in the desert for more than 40 years if they keep nominating McCain's and Romneys.

Only if they keep forcing them to the far right.

McCain and Romney had reputations for being able to work with Democrats and Republicans when their convictons were in synch. Both were moderates.

But in order to get the nomination, both were required to serve eight years at hard labor turning hard to the right. Culminating in VP selections that cemented their positions out there in far right la - la land.

McCain and Romney could have both won. Had tey been left alone to run as moderates. But the GOP tolerates no maveroicks and no moderates. With "Rino" echoing in their ears, they demand members to sign pledges to vote the party line, they demand that even a good idea be filibustered if it originated from the "wrong" side of the aisle, and they empower wacky Tea Partiers to do their dirty work.

One day they're horn brandishing, baby eating conservatives, then they're moderates.... you need counseling.

The GOP needs to do some very basic things like jettisoning the Rove's, abandoning the idea that the moderates are actually moderates, be willing to take off the gloves and paint the crappy picture that is the far left and stay on point... conservatism wins whenever it is tried and not watered down in some vain attempt to get the moderates.

Democrats are better at the political game than the Repubs right now. They now how to deflect scrutiny from their weak points and placing spotlight on fallacies of their opponents whether they are legitimate or not. Politics is cutthroat. There are no rules and the Repubs still haven't learned that. They sit back and think that the Democrats record speaks for itself. What they fail to realize is that the Dems know this and work actively to make their record the least noticed thing. Pointless things like abortion, marriage issues and race relations are hammered home to the point of fanaticism. If you ask a likely democrat voter what they think of a Republican, you will get a description of anything from the most evil human being in existence to a mythical creature that lurks in the shadows waiting for your weakest moment to devour your soul. That's controlling the message.

Republicans will never win with their current strategy because they spend too much time defending who they are instead of showing who Democrats are.

These are the things holding Republicans back. They think that they have to answer these questions and enforce their views when they ultimately know that it means fuck all in the grand scheme of this country. The economy, defense and foreign relations are what a president deals with. The rest is window dressing for the simple minded. The democrats use those topics well to show how inept republicans are at answering them.

Politics is a sport just like any other. The stakes are merely higher. Democrats play to win and Republicans are playing not to lose right now.
