My core value if I was forced to pick one, is limiting the scope and power of the Federal Government, and Obama is not going to do that. Not one bit, he will increase it.

Obama isn't a socialist but what he is - which is good - is a pragmatist. To be blunt I'm always careful of any politician who says they have a pure ideology. They're usually full of crap and never get anything done. This bloke knows what then he becomes president he is going to have a huge job in front of him. He knows there will be no time for ideology, that's for those of us who don't have massive political responsibility. He will do whatever it takes to fix broken things and that will mean pushing aside ideology and using pragmatism. You'll see the left boo him in six months after his inauguration. This is just my rough idea, you can find better definitions from sources that actually know what they're on about.

Socialism is an economic theory that holds that the means of production in a society should be socially owned and not privately owned. It can have a few shades to it but that's the guts of it.

Liberalism - this is where it gets difficult because Americans use the term synonymously with socialism but it's not the same - is, in the American sense, more about ameliorating the worst effects of capitalism. It's not about replacing capitalism, just knocking the rough edges off.

So, if I can use a couple of fairly blunt examples.

Democratic socialism is where someone holds that the means of production in a society should be socially owned but that the excesses of state capitalism (USSR) and totalitarianism (USSR, PRC, DRNK etc) should be avoided.

Social democrat is where someone is okay with capitalism but just wants it to be nicer to people who aren't in charge of the wealth.

Looking at the forum here I have seen a lot of “if Obama is elected, then the world will end” and generally a lot of venom spat out at a generally mild mannered normal guy. From some of these posts you would think he is the Anti-Christ incarnate come to bring hell to earth.

He’s not…He’s just a Politician…so calm down.

Sure, I support Obama now but I was sure I would vote for McCain until he picked Palin as a running mate. I still think that if you are voting on the economy McCain is probably the way to go as I think he will (regardless of what he says in public) increase taxes on upper income individuals and cut spending wisely. I also know Obama won’t ruin the economy and I will receive some tax benefit if he is elected so its not a deal breaker for me.

Maybe I can relate better to Obama and I really don’t like how republicans are attempting to vilify him. I mean it’s a guy that served on the board of the Annenberg Project so he is a radical communist? That organization sponsors NOVA on PBS so give me a break.

The whole ACORN thing, he worked with a group to increase participation of underrepresented voters. I could have done that, and now that there are aligations of potential voter fraud Obama is a crook and a liar, come on.

On the Rev Wright thing, why do the Republicans want to bring up Obama’s spiritual life, I would think they would be in favor of the fact that he attends regular services. Regardless of ones stance on the statements made by Wright, should all the parisioners who listen to a sermon be considered to agree with all of the speaker’s views?
