Grading the Final Presidential Debate

McCain may not have achieved what he needed, according to two snap surveys. A CBS News poll of 638 voters who hadn't committed to a candidate before the debate found that 53 percent judged Obama the winner; 22 percent picked McCain. A CNN poll of 620 adults found Obama won by a margin of 58 percent to 31 percent. Polls showed viewers of the first two debates considered Obama the winner in those face-offs as well.

Jon Stewart made the point to Ari Fleischer a couple nights ago that since we have now nationalized the banks, that we are more socialist than ever. This was Bush''s insistence, to nationalize the banks (and the bailout and etc).

What do you think of Stewart's take on that? Is Bush a socialist?

I have stated all along that I was against the government bailout.... Bush, unlike what the uber-lefties choose to spout off, is far from a true conservative or right-winger....

I thought McCain did better than he had in the last two debates that's for sure. However, he lost points by dismissing the woman's health issue on abortion and he lost points by trying to go after Obama on Ayers but then saying he didn't really care about Ayers.

Obama is never, IMO, tough enough on McCain. I'm not sure why he treats him with such kid gloves except that on same level I think he really does respect McCain and all that he's been through and accomplished. Obama had some real opportunities to bust through on McCain and Palin and he let them slide.

I have to wonder if that's not so as to avoid being labeled the "angry black man" he might feel he needs to appear cooler and calmer than the average politican. Where McCain can get at hot and bothered if Obama did that it would be seen very differently. And before anyone says I'm playing the race card, that's just a fact. IF Obama get snippy and sarcastic the way McCain does it would be viewed as a complete negative against him, not as passionate the way it is with McCain.

Overall what matters is how the undecided voters saw this debate and once again Obama won it hands down.

Me too, being against it, but do you think it is a socialist thing that Bush did? And if you do, doesn't that take the wind out of your sails at least a little, saying that Obama will be socialist?

It's fun to watch desperate little pubies running around trying to put the flames out on their sinking ship by acting like Mccain won last nights debate.

cute.

Well, I thought McCain won last night and I am voting Obama. I thought McCain won the first one too.

I inherently like McCain, but he has lost my confidence, the way he has thrown his dignity out the window, thrown his valuesaway, in order to win. Winning isn't worth it if you lose your value in the process.

/end soapbox

Can I answer that one Cali? I think anyone who would point a finger at Obama and claim he is a socialist and at the same time support a massive "bailout" and *nationaize* banking is rather like saying that guy's not on my team when they are wearing the same uniform and the only difference between them is number 43 and perhaps number 44. If the government had really wanted to help Americans then they could have done a whole lot more with OUR tax money directly to help Americans , rather than prop up corporate mismanagement that has little or no effect. In this country if a company is not managed properly and through its own shoddy business practice it fails then when has it become yours and my responsibility to come to their rescue when if you and I did not pay our bills to these very same companies they would not hesitate to let us fail. When a company fails it creates a hole that is filled by others. When MCI failed or Eastern failed of when McDonell Douglas was bought by Boeing it was not the end of life as we know it. IMO Bush and the entire 110th congress other than the brave republicans and democrats that actually listened to the people they represent have set this country on a path where failure is rewarded by the size of the intitution. Now, there is a long and endless line of companies, and now states looking for the same taxypayer handout that our representatives gave Wall Street and left the taxpayer with a massive bill to pay.

Mccain came away sounding like a doddering old man who gets angry about neighborhood kids running through his yard. Hell, his last words at the end sounded like a man pleading for his life.

When did he lose your vote? Last I heard you were staunchly in his camp, because you liked Palin, did you switch to obama?

Don't make me laugh. I wouldn't vote for Obama is he were running unopposed.

McCain lost my vote when he supported the bailout and all its earmarks. Why would I switch to Obama when he supported the same garbage bill?

If I do bother voting, it'll be for Bob Barr.

Would you vote for Hillary if she was the nominee and had supported it?

Bob Barr is an interesting choice, though he looks kinda weird.

Those polls are meaningless. The viewers watching CBS and participating in the polls are mostly democrats, and most independents are also democrats who just aren't crazy about Obama.

Actually, they polled approximately the same number of people as are represented by the party in the general population.

And P.S., Independents are going to decide this election... not "the base".

A CBS News poll of 638 voters who hadn't committed to a candidate before the debate...

To be fair.. whether they decided or not has no bearing on whether they are DEMs, REPs, or INDs... nor does it ensure proof of their claim as being uncommitted

But the article on the poll DOES state that it was a 40/30 split in favor of DEMs...

We shall see in November. Now what is great being a Republican is all I can do is win. I can not lose, you turds been claiming for months it was in the bag.
YOu won't hear me saying it is in the bag, yes he is leading which is great but like the Repubs keep saying the only poll that counts is Nov 4th. Plus I don't want to have to eat crow Nov 5th!

I love how you put up one of the few people who think McCain won, so who cares? Give it up son, your boy is DONE! And I love it!!!!!!!

First of all Halperin is considered one of the most liberal individuals in the media. Second, I thought a little diversity in opinion would be refreshing in order to stimuate some thought.
