Some people might refer to them as arms manufacturers, but that's SO negative. Let's just call it the defense industry even if the weapons aren't being used for defense. The POINT is that all those bombs and bullets need to be restocked for the next go 'round. Oh, sure, a few people will die horrible deaths, but just think of the way those stocks will SOAR!

Shock and Awe, BABY! That's where it's at. But let's not forget to mention the destruction of buildings and infrastructure because that means building construction will be BOOMING afterward. So, if you don't have any stock in cement manufacturers, best look into it.

Don't miss out on YOUR chance to profit from the misery of others!!!

Now, if we can just figure a way to get the Russians and the Ukrainians to shoot at each other while lobbying some bombs at one another too. Looks like there was some good news there today, as well.

Conservatives certainly must be happy today.

Any time a little kid dies (So long as it isn't a fetus) a Conservative gets his/her Dark Leathery Wings.

Let's see, the largest American corporation that makes its profits PRIMARILY from the sale of weapons is Lockheed-Martin.

Which IIRC is something like only the 44th largest in the U.S.

Whoa!! The "evil" defense industry.

Well, all hail diversification!

But keep something else in mind. When the US sells weapons to Israel, they pledge to only use those weapons for defensive purposes. Launching a ground offensive over an extended geographical area in response to random killings is not a defensive use of those weapons.

And in case you think this is just some kind of idle whining on my part, aside from the Israelis, guess who else the Arabs are going to blame when the weapons we provide to Israel are being used to kill Palestinian civilians!

They are evil, Ike once warned America that the worst thing that could ever happen to our foreign policy is getting defense industry men elected to high office. Do I really need to go further?

I like to call them war profiteers.

Really so you going to go after Canada, France, the UK, Russia, China, North Korea, etc. as well or just the good ol' USA?

After the IAF's impressive performance in the Six-Day War, the Lyndon Johnson administration decided to sell F-4 Phantom fighters to Israel in 1968, marking the first sale of American military equipment to Israel

You ever read his ENTIRE speech where he talked about a strong U.S. military being vital for world peace IIRC.

and in that speech he NEVER called for cuts in the U.S. defense budget.

Finally, Eisenhower had adopted the attitude regarding American defense of......we'll simply nuke them if they get out of line.

Are you prepared to endorse that as well?

I do not endorse anything about the defense industry as it is. Too expensive, too wasteful and far too politically involved.

What Eisenhower was warning us was about the possibility that the defense industry might end up having too MUCH influence on American foreign policy decisions. That's basically an example of the tail wagging the dog which is exactly what's been happening with Israel and the US the last few years. We used to be able to keep them on a shorter leash than we seem to be able to do these days. That had the benefit of saving a lot of human tragedy and blowback on America since we're the ones supplying many of the weapons the Israelis use to kill Palestinians and destroy buildings and infrastructure.

So that means you were against FDR and WWII..

Then again how far left can one go with comments like these...

Two things are clearly spelled out in the Constitution and that is the defense of this nation and the "right" to won property. Al the the second is slowly being chipped away..

But then who would back Israel if Russia is backing the opposition?

I believe innovation and jobs is a good thing. War is part of humanity.

So is crime, disease, and human suffering in general. That doesn't mean that we accept it without trying to minimize all of those things. And the truth of the matter is that there's no reason why jobs can't be created to alleviate human suffering as opposed to increasing it or throwing up our hands as if there's nothing that can be done about it.

How prescient. I was getting ready to ask why McCain is so bellicose, like many of us who were adults during the Vietnam War we lost friends; the cost in blood and treasure for that war, and the invasion and occupation of Iraq, far exceeded any benefit.

Seems I thought wrongly, some do benefit and are able to keep themselves and their kids out of harms way.

Is there anything in the US Constitution about a defense industry, or using campaign contributions to buy favorable votes in order to elect politicians who will support spending for massive weapons systems that then require expensive munitions? And then, what good are weapons if they're not used, right? I mean, how can you KEEP selling smart bombs and other expensive ordnance unless the ones you currently have in stock aren't fired in a real shootin' war?

Alas, death and destruction are the result. Uh, is there anything in the US Constitution about defending ourselves by attacking a country half a world away when that country doesn't even have a deep water navy to reach us (or threaten international shipping) or any other means to threaten this country like a long range air force? How are we defending America by attacking a country that can't attack us?

Seems they have never really been fought by the people who want them and start them, at least not in modern times, the poor always seem to be killing and dying to protect the rich and that shit has been a part of humanity for too damned long.

When you come right down to it, it's pretty amazing how often one sees conservatives on this forum embracing some kind of military action as a way of responding to one problem or another whether it's in the ME, or in Europe, or on our own southern border. It just seems as if they can't get enough of that shock & awe on Fox while the American flag waves up on the corner of the screen.
