Pollution in Production of Solar Panels an Issue at JinkoSolar Plant

Published on September 20, 2011 | By Eric Wilson

Walleyes, that is totally dishonest. You are stating because the Chinese are polluting from their solar plants, that all solar plants are polluting. Most Chinese industries are major polluters because they have no regulations preventing the pollution. Regulations that you regularly rail against that we have in this nation.

People like you control things in that nation, and the state of their environment reflects that fact.

solar is a joke my friend.........a solution only in the minds of the utopian k00ks.........nobody else.

Its 2012 s0n........using 19th century technology is ghey. "European style liberal"........you mean the kind that would have had all of Europe running on renewables this past month meaning millions would be frozen to death? Cool style.........:eusa_dance::eusa_dance::eusa_dance:

I'm a true Constitutional fundamentalist so whatever makes people happy, so long as it harms no one but them, should be free to do as they please. I would legalise all drugs (but punish severly the criminal misuse of them, in other words driving drunk is no defence for the murder you caused when you killed that poor kid. Germany has a law for incredibly drunk people that pretty much absolves them of responsibility in that situation. That is wrong IMO), gay's would be free to marry, polygamy would be allowed so long as they are not on Public Assistance, you could own any type of firearm you wanted so long as you were not a felon, mentally deranged or guilty of some misdemeanors, etc. etc. etc.

In other words I would do away with the vast majority of the laws in this country. Only those where people are harmed would be kept and the punishment for harming others would be severe (if it is intentional).

Yes, solar production has remained basically the same. The same chemical processes are used (they are just better at it with nowhere near the wastage and production failures), the same types of assembly are used etc. The techniques have gotten better but they are fundamentally unchanged.

I have a solar setup that is now pushing 22 years old and I have been doing a lot of research on the new setups and while they are much lighter they are still toxic as hell. The solar production facilities in the Third World are major hazards and will kill plenty of people in the years to come.

Please note, though. I am not anti solar, I just know that it is not scalable currently. It is fine on the small scale and will get better. I am actually consulting with a solar startup that has a very novel approach to scaling up production that will actually probably work in some very specialised locations, we are still running the numbers and working with local government entities to get a test section going.

What I am against is blindly following technology that is inefficient and environmentally damaging without regard. Some pollution is unavoidable, however, if you are going to pollute make sure the return for that pollution is worth it.

So where in your beliefs are you more liberal than me? I want all drugs legalized, but criminally punishable as you said. No intoxicated driving, etc. I don't care about polygamy(though they should receive marriage benefits of one partner) and am fine with it being legalized. Of course I'm pro gay marriage. I'm for very restrictive firearms laws. So where exactly? I'm not really into dick stroking contests... but I'm confused about the "I'm more liberal than you" stuff.

And you call solar a joke... as if it's a pipe dream and not worth pursuing. Do you think Solar has no place as a widely used energy source for cities, along with wind, geothermal, etc? Why is a mostly fledgling field of power that has remarkable potential now and into the future a joke? Recycling for solar is still an in-development process. You really think fossil fuels are the way to go in the future, because there's some pollution in the manufacturing process and improper disposal of solar power panels? Solar panels are absolutely non-toxic during use.

Where exactly now is the stuff saying that solar power manufacturing is more toxic than fossil fuel power plants?

I am more liberal on gun ownership clearly. Unlike you I believe the criminal misuse must be punished but if you want to own a machinegun with a suppressor you should be allowed to.

I never claimed solar is a joke. That is my view of wind power. I HAVE a solar system or didn't you read that part. I just know for a fact that solar is not scalable on to a large scale except in some very rare instances (I am actually consulting on a solar startup that has some possibilities) and solar is in the long run limited. It is not the panacea that it is claimed to be.

As usual you make broad statements without reading what I actually said. The absolute theoretical maximum efficiency for solar is 28%, the best attained so far is 24% and that degrades fairly quickly. Fossil fuels are still far more efficient then solar will ever be (and the ICE's that use them are getting cleaner and more efficient every year as are the electric power plants) thus the only way that solar exists is because of massive subsidies of public money (which you may have noticed is running out) so solar is going to die a quick death soon.

Where is the remarkable potential? They are at the same efficiencies now that they were at 20 years ago. Yes the panels are weighing less but they still produce the same amount of power. Nothing much has changed since I installed my system.

Geothermal is wonderful in the areas it's available but wind is a joke. A true joke. You do your own Google search and come back with what you find. I am appalled that they allow those damned things to be built. They kill hundreds of thousands of birds every year and they produce very little power for a great deal of money. They are a complete waste.

Here's another link to solar cell pollution problems. There are lots of them out there just look.

Sorry, but the gun thing you speak of is not really a "liberal" political stance. You think it's actually conservative to be in favor of heavy gun regulations and restrictions?

Oh and the 'solar is a joke' thing... I got you confused with skookers what's his face... the dude with the electrocution in his avatar.

Also... solar is entirely scalable to a large scale. There are all sorts of plans in the works and proposals for feasible solar power plants, and there are many more that are already constructed. Solar power is also already being implemented on a large micro scale in cities across the country... using them to power street lights and more.

I also think you may be stuck in the 60's-80's because your theoretical limits and actual limits are way off from what is being developed for solar panels. You don't really think that shit stays flat as technology progresses, do you? The theoretical limit on multiple layer solar cells for example is 86%.

And wow... China... really? You realize your article is about a Chinese solar cell manufacturer, right? Absolutely not a good example of what can be possible in terms of environmental friendliness and disposal techniques. And to think... the people who want to get rid of the EPA are completely fine with companies like those Chinese manufacturers to pump shit willy-nilly into the environment.

You know the funniest thing about this post? The post you're responding to is not even mine. It's because you kept responding to a fucked up quote and are too lazy to fix it.

Epic fail on your part.

Yes, it is. And we've had over 100 years of technological improvement to perfect it. Solar is 30 years old and stalled. Wind is a joke. Fusion would be great, the problem, of course is it doesn't work yet. Best estimates for it coming online are 50 years. What do you do till then? Freeze to death and starve because fossil fuels have been outlawed? Seems kind of dumb to me but that's what you folks advocate.

The only solar plants that don't pollute are those that exist withing the First World. ALL Third World based plants pollute like hell because there is NO CONTROL on them. Go to anywhere you wish (in the third world) and the pollution is rampant.

The process itself is extremely toxic. We in the west actually care about pollution, they don't in the Third World, and the solar companies are all running to the Third World to keep their costs down. Doesn't sound too environmentally friendly to me. Sounds like the typical corporate pricks trading pollution for profit.

You see, dear man, I really am a conservationist/environmentalist. I actually DO care what happens to the planet. Your cronies don't. They just want to take your money to enrich themselves.

Liberal means you support the right of people to be free to do what they wish so long as it doesn't harm anyone. You are a collectivist/socialist if you don't care about individual rights. In my world individual rights trump "human rights" every time. Individual rights you are born with. Human rights can be taken away at the whim of whatever government happens to be in control.

And they all turn totalitarian in the end.

As far as your technology claim, you do realise that they are talking about STACKING MULTIPLE PANELS right? That's what "multiple layers" means. I think that it is pretty obvious but you may not realise that. In other words 28% is still the max efficiency and when you stack them you actually LOSE capacity through destructive interference. The secret is stacking the panels in a way that sunlight can still penetrate deep enough into the matrix to still generate electricity.

Yeah, good luck with that. Your efforts have placed the country 1.7 billion in the hole. Care to try for an even trillion? Mindlessly throwing money at a problem won't help. If you are serious about correcting the issue you must mandate that all solar products must be made in the US, not assembled but manufactured here. The problem with that, of course, is it will push the production costs so high that few would be able to afford them.

However, in your perfect world the powers that be will legislate energy costs so high that only the very wealthy will be able to power their homes all the time any way.

Human rights is a core liberal principle. But you go ahead and be whatever kind of liberal you want to be. I'm not so dickish as to declare you not a liberal or "I'm more liberal than you so suck it". Really in the end all it is is a label. It's that your values matter to you, not that you're branded.

I don't understand though what you're talking about regarding Individual rights and Human rights. All rights can be taken away by an oppressive government. There's no such thing as a "born right" or "god given right". All rights are granted by man, and it is up to man to fight for them. The liberal view of human rights transcends government, with the demand that governments respect and uphold human rights for the progression of human society as a whole.

And yes I know I was talking about multiple layer panels. That's why I specifically mentioned multiple layer. Did you read? The theoretical limit of efficiency right now for the technology without multiple layers is closer to 38%, not 28%. By comparison, coal powered pants are 31%-45%... most of which don't really reach that. I believe wind power is around that level as well, perhaps higher. But I don't know the number off the top of my head.

Again, solar panel is still practically in its infancy... and has a long ways to go for improvement. There is no instant gratification and immediate peak performance in developing alternative energy sources, especially ones that are renewable. Fuel sources like coal, natural gas, oil and even nuclear developed over time to improve efficiency.
