It`s not just President Obama who is finding it hard to come to grips with the fact that Omar Mateen was a Muslim jihadist fueled by a violent religion. It's also the targets -- the LGBT community -- who aren't able to see this Islamic terror attack for what it was and are going out of their way to water down the narrative to something more palatable.
Writing about Orlando's tight-knit LGBT community in USA Today, Greg Toppo noted the "complicated narrative" that has emerged as details continue to come to light about the worst terror attack on U.S. soil since 9/11. Namely that the shooter himself was gay and was a frequent guest at the Pulse nightclub for years trying to pick up dates.
One patron recalled, "He would put his arm around them, buy them a drink and try to get them to dance." Yet, others say Mateen was often drunk and disorderly and once threatened a couple with a knife for making a joke about his religion.
A friend of two of the victims and regular patron of Pulse, Albert Harris, spoke to USA Today and said he had never seen Mateen there before, but noted the shooter picked a prime spot for maximum carnage, as the club has one of the smallest dance floors in the city and would be packed on a Saturday night.
Harris wasn't at the club that night but drove by just as the shooting was taking place. He saw people running and jumping fences to get away from Mateen, who was inside pledging his allegiance to ISIS and killing 49 people and wounding 53.
Harris's business partner, Chris Stephenson, said it doesn't matter if "Mateen’s rage came from fundamentalist extremism or self-loathing, the shooting is 'tragic either way.'"
“No matter what the reason, it’s homophobia," Stephenson, the vice president of Orlando's LGBT Chamber of Commerce, added.
