I'd be happy if they reflected their actual cost.

Costs are soaring.

For example, in the Canadian oil sands, the cost of extracting a barrel of oil has risen from $30 a barrel a few years ago to $60 today.

Pretty much all the difference in gas prices around the world is due to either taxes or, where its really cheap, the government subsidizing the nation's energy consumption.
 
Take special note of those countries whose prices are very low. It's not coincidence they are subsidizing their costs with what we pay them for oil, because they control the oil prices, not the oil companies.
