DeVry Refunds

It seems the government may begin cracking down on 'for profit' schools. Let's hope the institutions that prey on those seeking an education are forced to repay all federal student loans when found to be deliberately misleading people.

Actually, Trump and DeVos have worked to overturn rules that would allow student loan forgiveness for students who were screwed over by these types of institutions.

Why forgiveness from the govt when the institutions should have to pay it back?

DeVry is a good school, more legitimate than diploma mills like Harvard. Oh, you balk at that? See if ANYONE in the last 30 years has been dismissed from Harvard who paid their tuition? You pay, you pass.

DeVry has actual standards, something the left can't stand.

I worked for the DeVry in Irving, Texas for 8 years and I can say yes, the Admissions office would tell you anything to get you signed up. Need a student loan? No problem. The curriculum was always current and some of the best instructors were actually employed in the industry.

While the placement office did everything they could to put you into an entry-level tech job, the industry became saturated with newly-graduated Associate's and Bachelor's degreed students in the early 2000's.

Yeah... no. If Harvard just likes to take people's money without standards, then a lot more people would be admitted each year.

How exactly were the students "screwed over?"

How were they screwed over? They were lied to about job placement rates, and many students across the country were left with debt and no degrees when the colleges shut down. They were also lied to about their credits being able to transfer to other colleges.

They were screwed over by being promised immediate placement, into an industry that couldn't accept more entry-level techs, engineers, and programmers. The Admissions Office was very predatory too: Almost anyone could walk in off the street and get hooked up with a loan.

Yeah... no. If Harvard just likes to take people's money without standards, then a lot more people would be admitted each year.

Admission is odd at the leftist diploma mills. Still, show ANYONE expelled for academic performance, who paid the tuition. The FACT is that the leftist ivy leagues are in fact diploma mills. You pay, you pass.

No, you made the statement, so you are the one that has to prove it.

So, students must be guaranteed jobs by schools? Thousands of state universities turn out students who later can't get jobs, should these also be held to the standards you impose?

What makes a good school? Accreditation by a regional authority, and actual academic standards.

DeVry is a good school, the attack by the left because they are for profit is obscene.

Harvard is no longer some benchmark school that's all about academia and student performance. Neo-Liberals have taken hold of that school (as well as others) and have been using it's name to push all kinds of idealistic nonsense. The majority of people enrolling there and now minorities. I haven't a single doubt that one of their goals this year was to limit the amount of white students.

DeVry made that promise?

I didn't go there and don't work there, but I doubt they could be stupid enough to make that promise. Further, they are fully accredited, so the claim they would "take anyone" is absurd on it's face.

You are making statements without knowledge of the subject. Each school is supposed to list certain things including the number of enrollees that complete their degree, the average cost to graduate, and their job placement rates. A lot of these for profit schools fudged these numbers in order to get students to sign up for loans and enroll.

July 2017
FTC RETURNS MORE THAN $49 MILLION TO DEVRY STUDENTS

The FTC’s settlement with DeVry included $49.4 million to provide partial refunds to eligible students. Checks were mailed on July 5, 2017.

According to the FTC, DeVry’s advertisements made deceptive claims about the likelihood that graduates would find jobs in their fields and earn more after graduation than those graduating with bachelor’s degrees from other colleges or universities.

But we, the tax payer can? What happens when we can't anymore? Then what happens?
We didn't sign up for that loan.
Why forgiveness from the govt when the institutions should have to pay it back?

They can't pay it back when they are out of business like ITT Tech.

Buyer beware... The debt is still the students responsibility.

Nope, it is the governments responsibility to make sure these colleges to adhere to government standards. When these colleges do not, and they use government loans in order to take money from students, the students are just pawns in the scam, and thus shouldn't be held responsible for those loans.
