Fcc Considering Banning Tv And Radio Stations From Saying 'washington Redskins'

Who said so? Those items I listed are used to inflict death and destruction on other people...

Since you're speaking for them now, why would native americans want their tribe names to be associated with weapons systems used by the fed gvmt. that "stole" their land? You're a racist!

Um, i'm 1/8th Cherokee, I can speak for them all I like.

sure you are, chief..whatever you say..

Hate to break it to you, chief, but you do NOT speak for all native americans..get serious...that's just delusional..

A Cherokee Helicopter doesn't offend me.
So?..this isn't about you.

A rich guy using a racist slur to name his team does.

Ahhhhhh.....I knew we'd get to the heart of the matter once we stripped the BS away....Your standard fallback position; Class envy and jealousy of the "rich".

Define "rich", anyway, chief? What is the over-under for "rich"?

And frankly, what is it with you wingnuts that you feel a need to throw yourself like human sheilds to protect rich people.

"wingnuts" :rolleyes:
every day...all day long...childish name calling and class envy...:crybaby::crybaby::crybaby:

I think a guy who owns a multi-billion dollar football franchise qualifies.

Point is, people have objected to what he calls his team, including folks in the city it is in. He should do the DECENT thing and change it.

Ok..we'll call that the top tier...what's the low side of "rich" to you?
One of your favorite targets are the "evil rich".
I'm just curious about your perspective.

When you get to frame the topic and define the terms you never "lose" a debate, do you? :laugh2:

So because some "people" have objected, if he doesn't change he isn't doing the "decent" thing.

Nice trick there... you probably get away with it sometimes.

Doesn't work on me, though.

My perspective is pretty clear.

The evil rich are those who already have more than they will ever need, but still feel a need to take from those who are just getting by.

It's not so much a dollar amount than an attitude.

Well, how can people be outraged over this team's name when there are other sports teams who use similar names? There is the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, and Chicago Blackhawks. Teams with names using other ethnicities include the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Boston Celtics, and the Minnesota Vikings But do you see anyone getting up in arms about those names?

Nope.
doesn't matter. I dont think it should be banned but i can see how it would be

It should matter PB. Why are groups targeting just one team when there are many others who use 'offensive' names? Why such outrage? How can you see it being banned? Our government cannot ban someone from using a name they've been using for over five decades, then you have the First Amendment to consider. Political correctness is destroying free speech at breakneck speeds.
Cleveland Indians changed their name i believe btw.
Because here is why. Washington would be the real stepping stone for them to go after other teams. I can see it being banned just like the word ****** is typically banned on tv. actually PC isnt destroying freedom of speech. This case is the only real case we have had.

government can ban it, but then the courts should overturn it instantly.

I believe the Cleveland Indians did not change their name.

This is misleading at best and clearly dishonest, as you seek to contrive and propagate the impression that the FCC is considering this 'unilaterally,' when that in fact is not the case.

The issue concerns a law professor who has filed a petition with the FCC requesting that the broadcast licenses of stations be revoked for using the word 'Redskins,' a petition that the Agency must review and respond to.

Indeed, in previous similar cases the FCC itself has acknowledged the fact that it has no authority to revoke licenses as a consequence of speech considered to be offensive, where to do so would be un-Constitutional:

“[W]e cannot deny grant of a waiver based on allegations, even if true, that Murdoch will practice, as he purportedly did under his former ownership of the Post, racist and inflammatory journalism. That is because we are proscribed from interfering with a newspaper’s exercise of freedom of expression. Near v. Minnesota, 283 U.S. 697 (1931). Even if such allegations were directed at WNYW, a broadcast station over whose content we do have a limited role, see, e.g., FCC v. Pacifica Foundation, 438 U.S. 726, 747 (1978), both the First Amendment and Section 326 of the Act forbid us from censoring subject matter and opinions relating to religious beliefs, race or national background, regardless of how offensive they may be[.]”

No the FCC may not ban the use of 8220 Redskins 8221 on radio and TV broadcasting - The Washington Post

You and others on the right are truly tedious and inane, with your ridiculous efforts to fabricate 'controversies' where none exist for some perceived partisan gain.

There is not a thing wrong with what was posted.

(Reuters) - The Federal Communications Commission is considering whether to punish broadcasters for using the moniker of the Washington NFL team, the Redskins, a word many consider a slur to Native Americans, the agency's chairman indicated on Tuesday.

Reuters is hardly a right wing source.

FCC Considering Banning TV And Radio Stations From Saying 'Washington Redskins'

A government funded agency known as the FCC is considering banning TV and Radio stations from saying 'Washington Redskins" on air. But how can they without violating the free speech rights those TV and Radio stations? The FCC, from my standpoint, is being used to further a political agenda. If they follow through with this decision, they should be prepared for a slew of lawsuits. Such a decision would blatantly violate the First Amendment.

(Reuters) - The Federal Communications Commission is considering whether to punish broadcasters for using the moniker of the Washington NFL team, the Redskins, a word many consider a slur to Native Americans, the agency's chairman indicated on Tuesday.

The FCC, which enforces broadcast indecency violations, has received a petition from legal activist John Banzhaf III, asking that regulators strip local radio station WWXX-FM of its broadcasting license when it comes up for renewal for using the name "Redskins."

Banzhaf says the word is racist, derogatory, profane and hateful, making its use "akin to broadcasting obscenity."

"We'll be looking at that petition, we will be dealing with that issue on the merits and we'll be responding accordingly," FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler told reporters.

"There are a lot of names and descriptions that were used over time that are inappropriate today. And I think the name that is attributed to the Washington football club is one of those," Wheeler added.

The FCC could formally deem use of the team name to be indecent, and thus impose a de facto ban on it on over-the-air television and radio.

Despite protests, vigorous lobbying and even intervention from President Barack Obama, team owner Daniel Snyder has vowed not to change the name of his National Football League team.

FCC considering move to ban NFL Redskins team name Reuters

Stanford University's sporting teams (mainly football) used to be called the Indians but then in a similar PC motivated move changed their name to a color.

The Stanford Cardinal.

Not the bird.

The COLOR.

Well, Washingtonians needn't choose anything as inoffensive and meaningless as the name of a color to get around this whole Redskins name brouhaha.

In fact, the name needn't be changed at all in order to satisfy the silly people who thought this should be protested all of a sudden in 2014 rather than earlier.

But in any event, they need merely change the LOGO to that of a red skinned potato.

Problem solved.

And the FCC can go back to concern itself with more important matters.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present you, The Washington Redskins.

The owner should pick up the team and move it to a larger market and then change the name. Give the liberals a victory and assign the blame to them as well.

There's a beautiful sense symmetry about this idea!

Nope.

Except the term "Redskins" has only one definition in the Oxford dictionary and it means an ethnic slur towards native americans. Chiefs, Braves, and Indians are not inherently offensive names, they are monikers for a group of people. Fighting Irish is likely offensive but it doesn't derive itself from a name that was used to demean an entire group of people.

Once Again, the Daily Show knocks it out of the park on the Redskins.

Yet we see the President of Navajo Indian Nation attending a Redskins game.
