Masks can be quite effective but they have to be worn. In Japan, the Prime Minister called for masks to be worn. Within a few days, essentially everyone on the streets of Tokyo were wearing masks. Unlike the US, the Japanese wore masks not just at work but around friends and families. Also it was universal through the nation. Unlike the US, they had a pandemic response plan. They had enough masks for first responders and healthcare providers. They had sufficient masks stockpiled to provide two masks for everyone. Unlike the US, they actually enforced the wearing of masks throughout the country and it was never a political issue. And the masks stayed on long after American were burning and throwing them in the trash bins. Officially wearing of masks in Japan ended last month.

The results were 74,000 deaths in Japan, while in US we had nearly 1.2 million. Adjusting for population size, the US deaths should have been no more than 200,000. There were 900,000 needless deaths due primarily to a lack of leadership from the top, lack of planning at the national level and state level, and allowing masking, quarantining, and vaccinations to become a matter of personal choice, which was fucking insane.
