Fact Checking Trump's Yemen Raid Claims

How on earth can anyone tolerate the level of sheer outright lies coming from this Administration? Lies that are so easily refuted. And, once again - this issue goes down to Trump's foundation: the world is composed of winners and losers. A world where win-win can not exist. And a mission where a caveliear disregard to careful planning cost lives. But does he take responsibility...uh...no. He goes off on another Twitter War against critics.

FACT CHECK: Trump's Yemen Raid — 'Winning Mission' Or 'Failure'? It's Not So Simple

The tweets come after almost a week of debate on the success or "failure" of the raid. U.S. officials say they were able to gather helpful intelligence and that 14 al-Qaida militants were killed. But there were also multiple problems:

  • the death of an elite U.S. Navy SEAL, Ryan Owens;
  • 23 civilians were killed, including the 8-year-old daughter of Anwar al-Awlaki (Awlaki was an American-born cleric and inspirational leader for al-Qaida who was killed in a drone strike in 2011); and
  • a $90 million Osprey, a tilt-rotor aircraft, was destroyed after a crash landing.

The operation, the first authorized of the Trump presidency, also raises serious questions about the planning and decision-making of the current occupant of the Oval Office, as well as the truthfulness of information coming out of the White House.

Sean Spicer said the raid was planned last November — under the Obama administration — and that the goal of the mission was to get information.

But neither is true, NPR's Tom Bowman reports.

Rather, the specific place of this eventual raid was identified in November as one to focus on. (Other potential places were also identified.)

"The goal of the raid was intelligence-gathering," Spicer said Tuesday, "and that's what we received, and that's what we got. That's why we can deem it a success."

But the U.S. would not send in SEAL Team Six, the premiere anti-terrorist commandos, to pick up some cellphones and computers, a U.S. official told Bowman.

Part of the effort was to get top al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, leaders. While more than a dozen militants were killed, a top target, Qassim al-Rimi, either slipped away or was not at the location.

Rimi is the leader of AQAP, seen as a top recruiter and the third-most-dangerous terrorist in the world. Bowman confirmed that Rimi was "one of the objectives," along with disrupting planning and plotting, in addition to collecting material.

What's more, a U.S. official expressed concern that Trump made the decision over dinner. This should have been decided with rigorous debate in the Situation Room, the official said.

Many remember the iconic photo released by the White House of former President Obama surrounded by advisers during the raid in Pakistan that killed Osama bin Laden. The concern with the Yemen raid is the impression that this decision was made too cavalierly.

Wow, Trump is so effective, making America greater over the dinner table. This man wastes no time what so ever.

And your problem with this yet a other win Trump has provided is primarily the "impression" of it and not the undeniable actual results? Come up with ACTUAL PROBLEMS please!

As another poster pointed out, the president doesn't plan the missions himself, he simply says what he wants done about the intel he receives. The planning and execution of the mission is left to the people who will actually be carrying it out.

However..............the president is responsible for saying if a mission is a go or a no go. Even if this raid had been asked for by Obama, Trump is the one who pulled the trigger and told them to do it.

And, when Obama got Bin Laden, he at least had the decency to be in the Situation Room when it went down, rather than sitting at a dinner table.

Secretary of Defense James Mattis and Gen. Joseph Dunford Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, presented the plan over dinner at the White House, on Jan. 25, to Trump, his son-in-law Jared Kushner, and his political strategist Steve Bannon. Trump approved the plan then and there.
Presented the Obama plan.
No, the Mattis/Dunford/Trump plan. Obama was long gone.

Before every anti-terrorist raid authorized in the Obama White House only one question mattered. "Was it politically popular?" That's hardly a foreign policy. By the time these operations get to the presidents desk they are already approved all the way to the top. The President himself does not personally plan out a raid. And since Trump places national security before political favorability he is more inclined to listen to more risky ops planned by the pentagon. A real man makes real descisions, not because they're popular, but because they're necessary. Obama was the worst foreign policy President in the history of American Presidents. His national security advisor Tom Donalin was a political pollster, not an national security expert. His first national security advisor Jim Jones thought the WH was out of their mind. When Obama searched for his final Sec Def, he was forced to promote the next man down because his first 7 choices rejected him. Thank God we have a man willing to accept a little risk now.

But all through the campaign pathological liar Tramp kept saying how STUPID Obama's generals were, so how STUPID does that make Tramp to use a plan made by STUPID generals when he says he knows more than the generals?????? :cuckoo:
Well Ed, the plan apparently was stupid according to liberals, so Trump might have a point right?
Wrong.
So it was a good plan, great to know.
tramp's plan sucked.
what plan was that? You know he doesn't write them up right? You should direct your attention to the leaders he was referring to when he campaigned. They are still the same right now. you only confirm his concern as candidate trump.
Actually Tramp said many times during the campaign that HE had a PLAN to defeat ISIS so thoroughly and completely and hit them so hard that our heads would spin, but it was a secret.

I know his secret. He's going to do what Obama didn't; listen to his military. That plan works for me.

In Tramp's hands.
In the hands of Obama generals.....Trumps generals were not in place...get it right stop watching Fake news!

Indeed it is true that Obama got rid of all the war fighter generals. He had a complete Joint Chiefs of Staff without a single decoration for direct combat arms experience in combat zones. Obama thought gay service, appointing a gay secretary of the army, and women in combat jobs was more important than combat viability.

Indeed, for Obama getting a gay army secretary, allowing gays to openly serve, transgender sex change operations, and females in combat jobs were more important than combat viability. The military was the single largest anti Obama group in the United States and according to the military times 2012 election poll the troops attempted to fire their own commander in cheif. Obama even hired the first Commadant of the Marine Corps to have never seen combat as an infantry officer. Obama was all for changing the culture of the military, not sharpening their swords.

You don't need them anymore. You have drones and nukes and stealth bombers...

what a bunch of BS....

treating people fairly and equally was important to PRESIDENT Obama. Your orange sociopath couldn't care less about the military or he and his little randian idiot buddies wouldn't be talking about privatizing the VA (since we know what happened when baby bush privatized walter reed.).

one would think you loons would give up the obama derangement syndrome already. oh wait... i know... you're resentful because the orange fascist has about a 36% approval rating.
