Manned balloons were used for aerial observation during the CW and they were sometimes launched from ships.

So they inflated the balloons with farts? No, that result in a loss of altitude...
Yeah, Europe was quite taken with our use of balloons and it influenced a fellow named Hindenburg to develop the dirigible,,, and now you know ,,the rest of the story..

From a pure physics stand point, the boat was not carrying the aircraft, the aircraft was carrying the boat.

It was the first (and probably only) 'boatcraft' carrier.

Well shit then just about every surface combatant in the USN is an aircraft carrier.

Same with most large ships in WW2:

Since numerous countries likely do the same thing now, guess we should ramp up defense spending to counter the looming 'aircraft carrier' threat. :) And here I heard the US was the only nation that has carriers.

HUH?? Where did you hear that?

The Japanese released about 10,000 incendiary balloon bombs designed to be carried by prevailing winds to the US and set fires to cities and forests but they didn't work too well. The last one was found in Alaska in 1955. Many are still unaccounted for and they are still potentially dangerous.
