Employment rebounds in states that could decide next president
WASHINGTON — Employment has picked up significantly this year in a number of closely contested states that could decide the outcome of the 2004 presidential election.

The latest Labor Department figures on state jobs show that 10 of the 17 states expected to be the most tightly contested this campaign season were among the fastest-growing job markets in the country in April.

The report, out Friday, showed a marked acceleration in job gains in industrial states in and around the Midwest defying the expectations of economists who predicted last year that those states would lag the national recovery.

STATE GAINS

Several battleground states outpaced the USA in job growth. The top 10 in order:

Missouri
Oregon
Wisconsin
West Virginia
Minnesota
Michigan
New Hampshire
Florida
Nevada
Washington

Instead, some states are surpassing the national rebound. Employment nationwide grew 0.2% in April, but job growth was more than double that in Wisconsin, West Virginia, Michigan and Missouri. If the U.S. job market had grown at Missouri's pace, the country would have recorded a job gain of 968,000 in April, instead of 288,000.
