Driverless trucks, economic tsunami may swallow one of the most common US jobs

I can envision semi trucks being driven from point "A" manually by a driver to the entrance of the Interstate road. Wherein the driver exits the vehicle, and the truck is now driven by auto pilot until it reaches the end of the Interstate road closest to its final destination. The truck then stops, a waiting driver gets into the cab, and manually drives the truck to point "B". .....

Here are quite a few interesting videos on it, I don't think it will be long at all before they have these things on the road at all.

And one more for good measure, these aren't 50 yrs from now it's going to be very soon.

Driverless cars are a pipe dream.....

I wouldn't bet on that.

I would. No person in their right mind puts 70K pounds on the road with a computer pilot.

That's idiocy.

Do you know how long they've been prepping for them to be on the road already. I think the problem will be it's going to be hard for people to accept it just yet, just like those driverless cars.

I know I don't agree with this things whatsoever, they are creepy as hell. lol
fewer accidents and faster commute times.

don't complain; be Patriotic.

Driverless trucks hauling freight goods will someday be standard fare in the future.

But I doubt you will ever see driverless tanker trucks hauling flammable loads such as gasoline, diesel fuel, propane, or corrosive chemicals.

If they do try it. It will only take just 1 or 2 high profile explosive crashes, and the politicians will pass laws in the interest of public safety, requiring human drivers for all dangerous loads. ....

Daimler, the world’s biggest truck maker, says self-driving trucks will help freight companies save money on fuel and boost safety on the roads. In 2014 Daimler’s rival, Google, announced the creation of self-driving cars, without steering wheel or pedals. It’s hoped that automation in freight transportation has as much potential as driverless cars.

The truck maker says that autonomous vehicles will be connected to their environment and other road users to such an extent that they will avoid areas with heavy traffic, reducing traffic jams on highways.

Wtf? Why do I see a laptop in the cab?

Someone has to be in the cab at all times so this is going to save nothing. Could you imagine how many trucks could be hijacked without a driver? Pirates would love these trucks full of goods

I expect automated trucking to operate more like the railroad. They drop at huge pull off terminals and local drivers make the actual deliveries, pick ups, scale out and set the trailers up for long haul. Put the weighmasters and inspectors right in the terminals.

 I'm sure that's what the buggy makers said about Henry Ford's automobiles. Driverless vehicles are very much the future and I'd be willing to bet within 30 years they will be the norm, if not sooner.
I bet no. Of course 30 years is a long time so anything is possible.
$5?

It's going to completely change trucking for the large carriers...and with reduced overhead, they will drive rates down to the point the little guys won't be able to operate for a reasonable profit.

IOW, once it happens, it will move fast...IMO.

It's a technological tsunami, not an economic one.

And it's going to turn Trump's "poorly educated" base into socialists.

And the butthurt continues...what are President Romney and President Jeb! doing these days. :D

The driverless truck idea is going nowhere fast.

Only idiots would consign 70k pounds to go down the road with nobody driving.
Get Real.

Yeah and then the vehicle gets to decide if you live or die. You won't have the choice it's already being implemented where if the car has a spilt second to decide if you die or let a child live it's going to choose you , you get to die.
