Driverless trucks, economic tsunami may swallow one of the most common US jobs

Notice the man' arms and laptop in the driver's seat. Just saying.

It's a technological tsunami, not an economic one.

And it's going to turn Trump's "poorly educated" base into socialists.

And the butthurt continues...what are President Romney and President Jeb! doing these days. :D

Strawman.

Trump's base wants increased taxes on imports and restrictions on individual liberty.

Guaranteed income is next.

Just wait till they are on I-80 in dense fog, or lightning hits the truck destroying the computer.....computers cannot replace human reflexes and instincts no matter what they say....

The driverless truck idea is going nowhere fast.

Only idiots would consign 70k pounds to go down the road with nobody driving.
Get Real.

It's already happening, whether you choose to believe it or not.

Uber’s Self-Driving Truck Makes Its First Delivery: 50,000 Budweisers

I'm sure all those beers just stocked their damn selves where they went....NOT!

Over the road trucks...not delivery trucks.

Over the road truckloads of beer roll right out of the truck on an automated chain drive system...been that way for over a decade.

Empty bottle deliveries too, and then they are moved around the brewery floor via automation.

Like I said, it's coming. Whether you believe it or not is irrelevant.

You can't put driverless trucks on a road where people drive. That's not a good idea.

Who has a video of this thing backing up to a loading dock? That requires someone giving hand signals. I bet that isn't happening.

I don't see a truck backing itself up to a loading dock.

They will, eventually. But at first it will run like the railroad, but on the interstate. That's what I expect in the next 5 to 10 years. Automated trucks will just run the interstates, with large terminals build alongside like rest areas. Local human drivers will make the final deliveries and pick-ups.

They are not "driverless" because someone has to ride in them all the time incase of computer failure, and the regulations will be so high nothing will be saved. Why would a trucking firm spend more and get nothing back?

Another big risk are hackers and road pirates. All you need to do is slow to a stop in front of a driverless truck to stop it and you hit the jackpot.

should we ask the Dutch regarding flood control?

Love to see a set of doubles over black ice.
I think that the computer control of the truck, linked with satellites, would pull the truck over, and wait for an all clear before proceeding. Most of the black ice wrecks are from the drivers making poor decisions, or not keeping their radio on a weather channel.

I imagine that there will be surveillance cameras on the trucks, and there will be automatic alarms with direct satellite communications. So anyone trying a hi-jack would be on a very risky mission.

Were you born stupid? Or did you work hard to achieve the depth of stupidity? Sonar, radar, even lasers can be used to gauge the distance to the dock. Down to the millimeter.

Probably less often than human drivers do.

Do you always lead with insults? Do you have any proof of these things backing themselves up to a loading dock? If not, you're urinating upwind.
