The poll question: "Just off the top of your head, would you say you have a positive or negative image of socialism?"

Dems/left leaning - 53% pos ... 41% neg
Repubs/right leaning - 17% pos ... 79% neg
All Americans - 36% pos ... 68% neg

Strangely, Americans are almost unanimously positive about small biz (95%) and very positive about free enterprise (86%) and entrepreneurs (84%), all of which are contrary to socialism.

For people with little ambition socialism is a great deal. Give up most of your freedom and autonomy for three hots and a cot. People are more afraid of failure than they are desirous of success.
The Obama administration and Dems play on that. They tell people, oh you can't do that. You cant become rich. Those people who did become rich, it was a fluke, like winning the lottery. You're not that lucky. The deck is stacked against you. The rich wont allow you to become like them. Side with us and we'll at least guarantee you a minimum level of comfort. It's your only choice.

Americans are well-trained when it comes to obeying their corporate masters, and it is unlikely that they would embrace such a "horrible" thing as socialism--even if they do not even have a full understanding of what it is. Most Americans don't actually know how to define Capitalism--they confuse it with "free market" processes and "competition." Capitalism infers neither of those.

Sorry to say it, but most Americans are somewhat retarded in varying degrees.

You are free to resign and walk out of any corporation anytime you want. Yank the liberal anti-corporation IV out of your arm.

No, Americans are not free--and your ultimatum is a good illustration of the way citizens are "handled" in this economic system.

You're nuts. That much is clear. It wasnt an ultimatum. It was a suggestion. Dont like it? Leave.

YOU leave.

In reality, successful economies rely upon various approaches. As one example, the United States would not have developed as it has were it not for the "socialist" policies of land redistribution by the government (Homestead Act, railroads), the Rural Electrification Act (the rural red Midwestern states could never afford it on their own), and the many, many public works departments across the land that provide utility access.

LOL go ahead explain to everyone why I can't walk into my boss office and resign this should be good for a laugh.

"We're all socialists now!"- Finland PM when O-Care passed. Socialism is only well-regulated and fair democratic capitalism now. Due to Pub propaganda, half the US believe it's communism.

The Homestead act does not fit any conceivable definition of "socialism." What would the alternative have been, for the government to retain all the land? Would that be your conception of a pure capitalist United States - one where the government owned all the land?

The US would have been much more successful without all the socialist voo doo that you endorse. Government subsidies to rail roads, the REA and all the other government boondoggles did not speed the growth of our economy. They positively retarded the growth of our economy. They diverted resources into unproductive projects and away from producing goods that Americans valued more highly.

You're a case in point.

Those were good for the economy and in no way are they anti-capitalist. Socialists like to pretend capitalism is synonymous with greed and corruption.
