Dr. Khalid Al-As’ad

"On Tuesday, August 18, 2015, the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) carried out the death sentence for the 82 year old Director of Palmyra’s History Museum, Dr. Khalid Al-As’ad, after a grueling three months in which the terrorist group kept the professor in their captivity for the alleged crimes of “attending infidel conferences”, “worshipping idols”, “visiting Iran”, “having a brother in the Syrian Security Services”, and “remaining in touch with the Syrian Government.”

Upon apprehending the elderly doctor, the terrorist group tried him and later found him guilty of treason; this meant that Dr. Khalid Al-As’ad would be executed by the self-proclaimed Caliphate’s “Shari’ah Courts” – the aforementioned judicial institution chose to behead the doctor.

Without warning his family, the terrorist group publically executed Dr. Khalid Al-As’ad in front of a crowd of Palmyra’s residents who grew and loved the professor.

The terrorist group would then hang Dr. As’ad’s body on top of one of the columns he renovated in the city-center.

Dr. Khalid Al-As’ad began his work at the Palmyra History Museum in 1963; he would spend more than half of his life dedicated to the historic preservation of this ancient city, while also educating generations of Syrians and tourists with his profound knowledge and witty sense of humor.

Dr. Khalid Al-As’ad’s love and devotion for the ancient city of Palmyra prompted him to not abandon his post at the History Museum.

The untimely death of Dr. Khalid Al-As’ad has sparked outrage around Syria, as the professor was both in poor health and not political – he was said to have displayed no preference for either side in this brutal civil war that has destroyed much of Syria; instead, he advocated for peace among Syrians."

ISIS Destroys the Ancient Temple of Ba’al Inside Palmyra

"The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) has struck again; this time, the terrorist group targeted the ancient Temple of Ba’al inside the historical city of Palmyra in the Homs Governorate’s eastern countryside.

On Sunday morning, local sources reported the destruction of this 2,050 year old stone temple honoring the Canaanite god, “Ba’al”, by ISIS militants, who reportedly utilized bulldozers to take down this ancient site after they declared this archaeological building “heretical” for its idolatrous presence.

The Temple of Ba’al was decalred a UNESCO World Heritage Site before it was destroyed by ISIS; it is the second archeological site in Palmyra that has been destroyed by this terrorist group.

The destruction of the ancient Temple of Ba’al comes one week after the terrorist group executed the late Director of Palmyra’s History Museum, Dr. Khalid Al-As’ad – the late professor was beheaded by ISIS militants, who then preceded to hang his body in the city-center with a list of “crimes” he allegedly committed, including “visiting the state of Iran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.”

Three days ago, the terrorist group destroyed the 1,600 year old Syriac Monastery of St. Elian inside the ancient Assyrian city of Al-Qarayteen, which is located to the southwest of Palmyra."
