Unless it hits an eyesocket, a lot of guys will not NOTICE a .22 hit. (It will frequently deflect off the skull.) Again: .44 Magnum on the low end, and preferably, something with more steam than that! Think .454 Casull, .460 S&W, .50 DE, or .480 Ruger.

Actually .22's and .25's can be quite effective. The slugs tend to rattle around and tear stuff up.
Not good for stopping power though.

If Brown was running at him like a football player as witness testimony described then at 40 yards he was about 8 seconds away from Wilson and not responding to stop. It does seem like a long distance and was one of the things that bothered me about the whole thing in the very beginning. The Grand jury however had more evidence than we people here, and actually got to listen to the witnesses live. If the Jury had ruled the other way I would be satisfied with their decision because I have to figure they got a better handle on the facts than I do. Obviously though you, and many people destroying property and stealing merchandise dont have that perspective.

So lets say Officer Wilson should have waited until Brown was 10 yards away instead of 40 . At a run, 10 yards would be about 2 seconds away. Is that close enough for you?
