The concept of Dacha's seems uniquely Russian...a way of getting back in touch with the land?

Americans will buy beach cottages and condos, and cottages or hunting/fishing cabins in the mountains to get away. They vary from primitive to mansionesque.

Certainly not. In the Czech Republic and Slovakia they're called "chatas" and are exactly the same. Most of them are little more than huts on a small parcel of land. The tradition goes back to industrial and office workers in the grim cities of central and eastern Europe. There is nothing "uniquely" Russian about them.
