"The Civil War wasn't about slavery" is similar to what they believed in Japan - that the Japanese weren't at fault in WWII but were forced in due to the actions of other nations, including the United States. Japanese school children were taught this for decades after WWII.

It's a coping mechanism. People want to feel good about themselves, so when they - or their ancestors - have done something heinous and truly awful, they rationalize away the crimes.

It's human nature. People are willing to accuse others of bad things but won't hold themselves to the same standard. Germany is perhaps the only exception.

Actually it's just the freaking opposite. Progs get their panties in a bunch over a piece of cloth while they ignore the mental stability of the actual perpetrator of a horrific mass murder. Now this has to be the strangest attempt at application guilt I've seen in a long while. The reasons for the Civil War are a matter of historic record. The war was about States rights and the Souths fear of losing the balance of power in the Senate and was exacerbated by westward expansion.

How you conclude anyone would feel guilty about the actions of a people 150+ years ago is beyond Me. Today's people don't feel guilty about forcing more and more people into governmental dependance, let alone what some people in pictures did in previous centuries.
