"If you're young and not a liberal, you have no heart; if you're old and not a conservative, you have no brain."
— Winston Churchill

I see it quite differently.

If you're young and not a conservative, you're a pussy; if you're old and not a liberal you have neither a heart nor a brain.

I think if you are a liberal, you are pretty much fucked up altogether. Doesn't matter if you are an old liberal or a young liberal. All seem to be the same. What's there to discuss?

He didn't?

I've heard that attributed to him many many times. Are you saying it's an urban legend?

I'm saying this is a very famous misquote by Churchill.

It has often been attributed to George Bernard Shaw, the actual quote being:
"Anyone who has never been a socialist before the age of 30 hasn't got a heart. Anyone who is still a socialist after the age of 30 hasn't got a head."

This is my favorite Churchill quote:

Bessie Braddock: Winston, you are drunk, and what's more, you are disgustingly drunk.
Churchill: Bessie, my dear, you are ugly, and what's more, you are disgustingly ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be disgustingly ugly.

  • If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain.
    • According to research by Mark T. Shirey, citing Nice Guys Finish Seventh: False Phrases, Spurious Sayings, and Familiar Misquotations by Ralph Keyes, 1992, this quote was first uttered by mid-nineteenth century historian and statesman François Guizot when he observed, Not to be a republican at 20 is proof of want of heart; to be one at 30 is proof of want of head. This quote has been attributed variously to George Bernard Shaw, Benjamin Disraeli, Otto von Bismarck, and others.
    • Furthermore, the Churchill Centre, on its Falsely Attributed Quotations page, states "there is no record of anyone hearing Churchill say this." Paul Addison of Edinburgh University is quoted as stating: "Surely Churchill can't have used the words attributed to him. He'd been a Conservative at 15 and a Liberal at 35! And would he have talked so disrespectfully of Clemmie, who is generally thought to have been a lifelong Liberal?"

  • Indeed, a glance at Churchill's biography shows that "Winnie" was a true independent, bouncing from Conservative to Liberal and back again during his career, joining those who would best advance his goals:
Churchill left the army in 1899 to take up politics, but first travelled to South Africa as a journalist. Although taken prisoner by the Boers, he made a daring escape and returned to safety despite the price on his head. His consequent fame no doubt aided his success as the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Oldham in 1900.Churchill was instinctively independent, willing to work with any side agreeing with his goals. His stand against protectionism led him to join the Liberals in 1904. As President of the Board of Trade in Asquith's Liberal government he set up labour exchanges and unemployment insurance. ...
He returned to the Conservative Party in the 1920s and spent 5 years as Stanley Baldwin's Chancellor, but again fell out with his party. Unpopular and ostracised for a decade, his warnings from the backbenches of Fascist imperialism went unheeded. His influence, it was said, had fallen to zero. However, Chamberlain's policy of appeasement failed, leading to his resignation and to the vindication of Churchill's position. ...
Following the Labour landslide in the post-war 1945 election, a surprised Churchill found himself leading the Conservative Opposition. He then served four years as a peacetime Prime Minister.

    • Variants: Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has no heart; and any man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains.

    • Show me a young conservative and I'll show you someone with no heart. Show me an old liberal and I'll show you someone with no brains.

    • If you are not a socialist by the time you are 25, you have no heart. If you are still a socialist by the time you are 35, you have no head

He also said that no socialist system can withstand violently worded opposition so he was definately against socialism and was shocked how many socialist politicians were getting elected into office after WWII especially after they got through fighting the NAZIs.

There is another interpretation to that quote and that is youth is full of passion and stupidity while age is filled wisdom and calmness so perhaps this is a positive spin on conservatism.

The both of you are full of shit.

Refresh my memory, did you come post in my thread or did I come to yours?

If you think me replying to your post, in my thread, addressed to me, constitutes obsession on my part, then you're even more retarded than I first suspected.

Keep proving me wrong tho.

Proving you wrong is easy, as we all know Mani.

Any generality on opinion based on age is moronic, most people understand that.

Do you?

Ahhh, now Xenophony is invoking the royal "we."

I guess that ass-whooping I gave him has sent his stock so far into the shitter that's he's willing to try anything.

Things that happen in your imagination are not reality Mani, you need to take your meds again.

To refresh your 'memory' you claimed I am a far right neocon.

I asked you to produce proof of that, say by outlining my postions on Bush, the GoP, the two wars and so on.

Your answer to that was 'I don't know.'

My credibility is just fine bud, but thanks for looking out for me!

That's no my recollection at all.

But it doesn't really matter. IN MY OPINION, based on the sum total of your posts I've read since you joined, you are a neocon masquerading as something else.

But I'm willing to keep an open mind about it. If I'm wrong, eventually I will come to realize as such. In the mean time, you're xenophony to me.
