I seriously doubt the Essex Class carriers could handle modern US aircraft carrier-based planes even with a very extensive refit. The Lexington spent the last two decades of service as a training carrier and was dated even at that time. The rest of the Essex class had been mothballed long since.We had about 50 carriers in 1944.

Wow, what a pile. Note: the last Essex-class carrier was in service until 1991! That would be CV-16 the USS Lexington. Many of them could (and did) handle jet aircraft! Offhand, John McCain flew off the USS Oriskaney (also an Essex) for the mission he was shot down & captured on. The Essex and, especially, the Midway-class carriers most certainly could handle modern aircraft!
