China's new aircraft carrier can't land planes

It was designed by the soviets for V/stol (vertical take off and landing) aircraft and Helocopters. It was never designed as a convential aircraft carrier. That is why it is not that big a threat. China does not have V/STOL aircraft like our Harriers. If they do they are of the old soviet design yak 38.

We had about 50 carriers in 1944.

More like 200 and all of them would be sunk within minutes in a modern war. Also most of them would be incapable of handling anything bigger than a helicopter these days. The aircraft are far bigger and more powerful than the WWII types.

You're comparing a grape with a space ship. It doesn't compute.

Yeah, except for the Enterprise andHornet they were "Escort Carriers" designed to carry about 20 aircraft and to provide air cove for surface ship instead of attack carriers.

Tell me something I don't already know.

But in relative terms - the USA in 1944 ruled the waves.

More than today.

I'll tell you something that don't know judging by the tone of your post, The US rules the waves today more than ever.

Not much competition.

Regardless, the entire premise of this thread is pretty goofy and a bit disingenuous. Anyone who is informed already knew that the Chinese did not launch this carrier with any intent to make it combat-ready. The carrier is a baby-step for future generations of attack carriers designed to project Chinese power. It'll take over ten years.

Mao, "The journey of 1000 miles begins with the first step." The Chinese are not fools.

Everything today is Made In China. (except aircraft carriers)

Back in the 50s - everthing was Made In USA.

Wow, what a pile. Note: the last Essex-class carrier was in service until 1991! That would be CV-16 the USS Lexington. Many of them could (and did) handle jet aircraft! Offhand, John McCain flew off the USS Oriskaney (also an Essex) for the mission he was shot down & captured on. The Essex and, especially, the Midway-class carriers most certainly could handle modern aircraft!

I seriously doubt the Essex Class carriers could handle modern US aircraft carrier-based planes even with a very extensive refit. The Lexington spent the last two decades of service as a training carrier and was dated even at that time. The rest of the Essex class had been mothballed long since.
