The reasons for low high school graduation rates are varied. If education is not valued in the home, students may not be able to see the need for attending school. They may not have made the connection between school and success in life. Others dropout because they become frustrated with continuous failure due to learning difficulties or disinterest. Unfortunate home environments or personal circumstances that make attending school difficult may plague other students.
Apathy, Disinterest and Boredom
Students who are apathetic or bored are habitually absent, fail to complete homework, do not study, have no long- or short-term educational goals and therefore, contribute to the low graduation rate. Additionally, education may be a low priority in the home, so students see no value in attending school. This may be especially true if the student is already employed or knows of others who have dropped out and have achieved some level of success.
Teen Pregnancy
Teen pregnancy indirectly contributes to a lower graduation rate. Financial concerns, the logistics of childcare and lack of sleep are problems that might cause a new teen mother to give up her dream of graduation and drop out of school. A teen dad may elect to drop out so that he can work. Additionally, the stigma attached to being an unwed mother may be the source of great embarrassment and cause a teen to drop out.
Family Responsibility
Students who must contribute to the financial welfare of the family can negatively impact graduation rates. In the case of high poverty, a student may drop out to go to work to supplement the family income or because the student provides the sole financial support for the family. Other students may drop out to assume childcare responsibility for younger siblings or to care for ill or aging parents or grandparents.
Failure to Succeed
Student frustration and failure contribute to a low graduation rate. Some students may struggle academically and do not advance once in high school because of failed classes. The failure may be a result of an undiagnosed or diagnosed learning disability, apathy or lack of strong academic potential. After repeated failure, these students give up and drop out -- especially if their peers have moved on to the next grade or to graduation.
