Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is calling on a drug company to justify a dramatic spike in the price of a 62-year-old drug that was reported Sunday.

One day before rival Hillary Clinton is set to propose a plan to rein in high costs for specialty drugs, Sanders in a letter to Turing Pharmaceuticals demanded an explanation for why the price of a drug used to treat dangerous parasitical infections leapt from $13.50 per tablet to $750 after the company acquired the drug from a competitor.

The price hike followed the sale of the drug, Daraprim, to Turing in August for $55 million, the New York Times reported.

“The enormous, overnight price increase for Daraprim is just the latest in a long list of skyrocketing price increases for certain critical medications,” wrote Sanders and Rep. Elijah Cummings, who are investigating sudden jumps in the costs of older, generic medicines.

that's a ridiculous increase, but thanks to obama care much of that cost will be shifted to us.

aside from that, the company should tell bern to go fuck himself, as it's none of his business.

It's a business matter, he wouldn't comprehend the explanation anyway

Martin Shkreli: Entrepreneur defends decision to raise price of life-saving drug 50-fold

This is capitalism. The owner makes a good point: if he is to innovate improvements in this drug someone needs to pay for it. Nobody has to buy the drug (there are alternative treatments) and if he doesnt sell any he will have to lower the price.
In any case this is irrelevant. The price increase was cancelled.
TB drug price cut—but still twice original cost

yea its bleed them till they die......nice..real nice...people should not have to choose between meds and food or rent....greatest country in the world my ass

WOWWWWWWWW. Yeah, you're right, this is capitalism, a shitty system when left unregulated. There is no possible way to justify increasing a price 50 fold, and most of these innovations are simply minor changes, pharmaceutical industry is broken and corrupt.

Wow mere assertion followed by sweeping generalization. Yes this one incident over a minor drug represents the entire pharm industry. How stupid are you, yet again?

Not just a mere assertion, you need to research the pharmaceutical industry more. Explain why virtually all new drugs are simply minor changes of existing drugs.

It isnt true, for starters.
Second, where new drugs are minor changes the reasons have to do with patent laws, which limit the recapture time companies have on their drugs.
As usual the culprit is government. First, a number of years ago they reduced patent times from 7 years to 5 years, supposedly to "help" consumers. Of course that reduced the ability of companies to pay for the R&D etc that went into the drugs so costs soared for those first 5 years.
Next the cost to get a drug to market is about $1B, thanks to extensive gov't red tape and redundent testing requirements.
So high cost to develip coupled with shorter times to recoup those costs have resulted in higher prices to consumers.
You are welcome for this lesson in pharm economics. Now go kill yourself.

It's not true? Really? Explain why other countries keep drug prices low and have thriving drug development. The government needs to take over drug research, not for profit companies that will take a drug and rise the price 50X the normal amount when it's a drug that saves people's lives.. LOL. They've already done the math, this "research" is largely bullshit, big pharma has you by the hook.

This is a case where the government should have the power to come in and simply manufacture the drug at cost and put this asshole out of business.

I wouldn't take a chance with my life by ingesting manufactured medicine made by our government. Thats dangerous.
And you'd rather trust for profit drug producers that have a history of putting out unsafe drugs? LOL.

I trust the research by private companies over govt. That said, the major pharmaceuticals are all in bed with the fda. And of course, you trust that alliance. I don't.
