Australia could take 4000 Iraqi and Syrian refugees as church leaders urge Abbott government protection for Christians

Australia's Special Humanitarian Program, announced in the budget, has allocated 20,000 places over five years for what the government describes as the asylum seekers "most in need of protection".

The Archbishop of Canterbury was in Melbourne on Wednesday to attend Dr Freier's inauguration as Australia's Anglican Primate at a service at St Paul's Cathedral.

Dr Freier said he appreciated the Abbott government's ''rapid response in providing aid to the displaced thousands of Iraq'', but wanted it to go further by offering urgent asylum to those facing genocide.

Asked by Fairfax Media whether he expected the Abbott government to agree to such a departure from its hardline border protection policy, Dr Freier said that he believed the government could differentiate between wider border protection and the emergency

Dr Freier said he had launched an appeal through Anglican Overseas Aid to help provide succour and relief for those fleeing Islamic State fighters, and he asked Anglicans ''to give sacrificially''.

Fair enough...a new home and protection for some Christians of Iraq.

The Islamic State's march must be stopped, or all Christians worldwide will be enslaved or beheaded.
