The African Union's Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) Presiding Officer, Dr. Joseph Chilengi, said that the Council has adapted a memo presented by the National Group for Human Rights – Sudan (NGHR – Sudan) to be handed to President Obama during his visit to Addis today in which the US Administration is called for lifting sanction from Sudan describing it as a clear violation to human rights as it affected the essential rights of the Sudanese citizens including health, education, work and movement.
It is worth noting that the NGHR – Sudan which includes about 30 Sudanese NGOs working in human rights has prepared a detailed memo on the negative impacts of the US sanctions on human rights.
Chilengi said that the demand is fair and is based on the UNSC Human Rights decision to appoint special Rapporteur for the unilateral sanction imposed by the great powers.

He added that President Obama and the US Administration should express commitment to the resolution of the UN Human Rights Council and to recognize that classifying a state as a terrorist sponsoring country affects the citizens and the upcoming generations.

For his part, NGHR – Sudan Chairperson, Ibrahim Abdul Halim said that the memorandum included all types of human rights violations resulting from the sanctions, adding that there are additional attachments on the general and private damages in specific sectors such as women, children, farmers and labourers.

Abdul Halim called on all the concerned parties to collect the required date to activate the decision issued in Geneva.
He valued high the African Union's stance in supporting Sudan issues, adding that it is high time for more African cooperation.Sudan Vision Daily - Details
