Drugs are just another symptom of the problem they aren't the problem. The problem is two fold. First we've spent the last fifty years making a cootage industry of blaming everyone on God's green earth for the violence but the perpetrators for whom we've provided every excuse in the world to continue to behave like horse's butts. If you make excuses for that which is patently inexcusable you will get more of that which is patently inexcuseable.

The second step in this unholy alliance is the odd notion that you can have self esteem wothout accomplishment which has simply resulted in a culture that confuses fear with respect.

I can only speak from where I sit. I teach in a very "diverse" high school. Rich, poor, white, black, Hispanic, etc. Our county ranks #1 in substance abuse, #1 in child abuse, and #2 in teen pregnancy. If I had to name one thing to fix; it would be teen pregnancy. There is no more shame and these young girls are doing drugs while pregnant and think that having babies is cool. And then the abuse and neglect begins and the cycle continues. But they get money from welfare, and the moms and the grandmoms see a new baby as another meal ticket. We reward this behavior with tax money, and NO ONE tells them they should wait to get married. Well I do. Probably lose my job for it one day.

Children raising children with no dads. That's what's destroying our cities.

This is all true. But how do we regulate parenting?
It is perfectly legal for anyone, no matter how good or bad, rich or poor, ready or shockingly unprepared, can have all the kids they want. And I'm not sure that keeping any money from the mothers would necessarily cure this.
Look at the population of any depressed country. They're having tons of kids with no check coming from their government. I think the problem is deeper than money, although this whole system is fucked up and needs to be totally overhauled.

My take on the video...
Violence in our country is an epidemic. It is such a part of our culture, I'm not sure we can even pull out of this thuggish abyss.
We need to start prosecuting violent crime differently. I am aware of the hardships of poverty and the appeal of gangs to the poorer, but this shit's gotta stop. And it can.
Here's how we do it:
1) De-criminalize drugs.
Not just pot. All drugs. Believe me, anyone who wants to take heroin is already taking it. Very very few are deterred from taking drugs because of the legality. Overnight the income for gangs dries up and much of their appeal as well.
2) Release non-violent criminals from jail to make room for ....
3) Prosecute violent criminals severely.
First offense, depending on circumstances, a smart slap on the wrist. (this one's your chance to turn it around, kids)
Second offense, once again, depending on circumstances, 7-12 yrs. Yep that's right. Law abiding people don't end up with 2 violent felonies.
And if you get a third, well you have no interest in society, 25-life.
This gang mentality can not and must not be allowed to prosper in our slums or anywhere else for this matter.
And now here's my liberal side....
This will work if in tandem we start really funding schools. I mean REALLY funding schools. And bring on accountants to make sure money goes where it needs to and is not wasted. More of our tax dollars must be used for education. It's the key to our future as a nation.

I saw the video here...

It's easy for someone to call the bystanders cowards for not rushing in to defend Derrion right away, but the video shows it was an all-out war... and realize Albert gave up his life trying to stop one of them. If I saw all that going on, admittedly I'd be too scared for my own safety to be anywhere near that. Even with just a cell phone camera. The guy filming it himself had a lot of guts considering what was going on, IMO.
