Angle referrs to Social Security as WELFARE!

Folks in Nevada know the difference between earned entitlement programs and those that aren't. Centrists, I believe, are not against programs that will turn potential taxpayers into real taxpayers.

Angle, I believe, does not understand the validity of that, or simply does not care.

Exactly. Angle is not going to lose votes over this.

Hey - I thought libs liked welfare. Why would they consider this comment insulting?

harry reid hasn't really opened his purse yet. if propaganda still works in the very least, angle will stand no chance in this election at all.

Talking about government and society with some of you folks is like trying to dicuss physical science with FLAT EARTHERS.

Define welfare, please.

We cannot have a sensible discussion until we have an agreed up definition.

I'll posit the following for purposes of discussion...

Everything the government does, is some kind WELFARE since everything the government does serves the WELFARE some or all of us.

Every state is a WELFARE state, folks.

We can debate which services we'd like, but calling one kind of services socialism, while igoring the SOCIAL benefits of another, is simply living in DENIAL.

Really? I would love to hear them comment on that.
 He's an idiot. SS is not welfare, it is a return of money taken out of your paycheck

Fail. Your SS payments come from MY CHECK and mine would come from the next generation's.

Well, that's how it was supposed to work.

Also, you have no right to SS no matter how long you pay into it. They can deny anyone at any time fro any reason.
Well...other than the fact that I am paying into to SS you still are incorrect. It's not welfare and you can't deny it to anyone that has paid in...unless of course the government itself collapses.

ravi, just like all of our other social entitlements, an act of congress can deny disbursement of SSI. it's likely that the terms of SSI will be changed by such an act in the next 5 years. is this really much different than the AFDC to TANF change of terms enacted by congress in the 90s?

one really cant draw a substantive contrast between social entitlement programs, i say.

Ah....that is true. Don't they sometimes talk about raising the retirement age? I suppose that would work in periods of low unemployment but it would be a bit evil to do right now...

Guess what Sharon, Social Security funds have been stolen for years. Just ask your hero George W. Bush. He tried to pay for the Iraq war with the money. Wait! We borrowed that also, didn't we?

So when is the Iraq oil money going to start paying us back for our war efforts there? W said it would, didn't he?

Can you do anything in life but deflect to Bush?

Is it a medical problem?, that I could understand.

i think that's inevitable. the bigger difference between conservative and progressive polity is that conservatives feel that austerity in the middle of an economic lull is the way to go. both policies will agree to modify the promise of SSI, perhaps in more ways than the age alone... its just a matter of when and how harshly.

Consider what it really means when SOCIAL SECURITY benefits can be changed.

Social Security was SOCIAL CONTRACT was it not?

People paid into that CONTRACT and now when its time for some of us to reap the benefits of the contract, the payout is changing.

Nice, huh?

Times change. The average mortality in 1935 was 65. Now it is almost 80. Times change.

No wonder the dude sits around in old tshirts, getting more out of SS than they put in and it's welfare. wait BHAAHHAH LOFL
Show me a lower return on retirement investment. Masingil called they think your too Douchey

The American people have not forgotten the neo-con and corporatist Republican Congress from 1994 to 2006. They have not forgotten Bush/Cheney. The American people will not give the GOP a governing majority until it repents and reforms. Every time anybody talks about "Bush and deflecting" reminds all readers the GOP has not repentance and reformed.

So, are you saying the retirement age should be 75 now?

Social Security is paying People Benefits that have never paid a dime into the program, some people are 2nd and 3rd generation recipients that their parents and grandparents have never paid into the system and they still receive Benefits, so in some cases is is just another form of Welfare Recipients that are sucking off the teet of the people who paid into the system.

Better go study the social security requirements, and maybe you will post more accurately. Go study the 40-quarter requirement, then come tell us what you have learned.

Both sides of the Political party have been screwing the hard Working Public for years, we cannot change the past, but we can change the future, we can also work on the ineptness of what is happening now.

I see too many people working on and bitching about what others did, than working on what we can do NOW and in our FUTURE.

I do whole heartedly understand we can learn from the past, but to constantly blame Bush 10 times a day is ridiculous, did Clinton, Carter, Reagan, Bush Senior, Nixon or any one else never do anything wrong?

Let's concentrate also on what is going on with the New and Current Administration

.

Gremlin, I agree with much you say. But we cannot work well now and prepare for the future if we forget the past. Both parties would like us to forget the past. No more Clintons, no more coporatists, no more neo-cons, no more Bushes and Cheneys. If Americans can't do that, they will continue to be screwed.

The 40 quarter requirement is for the individual paying in to SSI while working and needs to pay the minimum.

I am referring to children and spouses that can receive SSI even if that 40 quarter spec has not been met.

I will read up and thanks for the info, I may have been misinformed

No doubt.

Understandable, of course.

Fair?

Well it depends on how one defines "fair", I suppose.

SS was there for me when I needed it, just as promised.

Others of my age will probably not have the same experience.

No...Socialist Insecurity is and always was the world's biggest Ponzi scheme.

And yes, I find it shocking...just shocking...that the federal gubmint would take money from the people under pretense, then change the rules on how they may get it back...Absolutely shocking!

Given what we saw in the First Great Republican Depression, I think that Social Security is one of the greatest social inventions ever.

It's a fraudulent Ponzi scheme.

This gaurantees that no matter how the greedy mess up the finances of the nation, the American Worker will have something at the end of his career.

No, it doesn't guarantee anything because like any government program it can be killed at any time and if you had paid into it for 30 years at that point, well, too bad.

Anybody who doesn't save for retirement thinking they can just rely on SS is a moron.
