With the new rules for Nascar's Chase for the championship, it is going to be an interesting 10 weeks.
16 drivers made the field. 13 of those had wins. Brad Keselowski was the number 1 seed with 4 wins and 3 others had 3 wins apiece.
From 16, the field will be whittled down to 12 after the first 3 races, if you win one of those races you advance to the next round, otherwise, it's the top drivers in points after those 3 races.
Then the same scenario plays out to get down to 8 drivers after the next 3 races.
Same thing to get down to 4 drivers. Then things get really interesting.
In the final race, the top 4 drivers, have the one race, and whoever finishes highest in that race is the champion.
I think it will be interesting, though, I don't really think it will crown a true champion.
Theoretically, Dale Earnhardt Jr. could win the first 9 races of the chase and not win the championship. A driver could win the championship and not win a race all season. There are 3 drivers in the chase that could accomplish this feat. All they really have to do, is average a top 10 for the first 9 races, and then finish highest of the 4 left in the final race.
Who will be champion? When it comes to this time of year, Jimmie Johnson has shown, he is the man. Brad K has a championship already, and is running very well, and Jeff Gordon seems to have rekindled the fire that made him a household name. Dale Jr. is still looking to capture that elusive title, and Kevin Harvick is probably the hottest driver in Nascar at this moment. Kyle Busch can win anywhere, anytime, and his brother Kurt is in a ride that could capture the gold. Any driver in the chase, has a shot.
