Americans in the 1950s

Most of the South, indeed the US, had no AC in the 1950s.
We finally got AC in 1955. It cooled the downstairs, but our bedrooms upstairs still sweltered. On really hot nights us kids would sleep on the living room floor. We had an old Holland coal furnace that was converted to heating oil but there was no practical way to install central AC to it. I don't think central AC was even a thing back then.
