The Left hates her and does every thing it can to besmirch her. So, here's a very complete article that sheds the light on who she is and what her status is.

IMHO, we should have far more like her in Congress.

Too bad the GOP's track record of disrespecting war veteran Senators is nothing to be proud of.

Max Cleland - Wikipedia the free encyclopedia

A week before the voting an Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll showed Cleland ahead by five points, 49-44. By Saturday before the race a poll by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution the lead had shrunk to 48–45 which was within the poll's margin of error.[15] On election day Cleland lost to Chambliss 53-46. Some supporters blamed a Chambliss TV ad featuring the likenesses of Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein while criticizing Cleland's votes against homeland security measures.[16] Cleland supporters claimed the ad questioned the senator's patriotism,[17] while Chambliss supporters claimed it simply questioned his judgment.[17][18] The ad was removed after protests from prominent politicians, including Republicans such as John McCain and Chuck Hagel, both of whom are also veterans of the war in Vietnam.[19][20]

It's the fact she's batshit crazy that worries most of us.

You clearly did not pay attention to the leftist rants and ravings when she campaigned. They could NOT get enough of trying to belittle her service and attacked her for NOT being a "combat veteran."

Some supporters are idiots. I watched the actual ad, couldn't have been more tame.

I don't even remember the guy, but if this ad was responsible for his loss, it was either very true, or the guy wasn't a very good candidate.

The man gave 3 of his limbs for his nation and was in a wheelchair but the GOP decided that he was no different than Osama and Saddam.

If you got that from that ad, you are beyond helping.

Watch it again, this time using whatever reserve of critical comprehension skills you have left to muster.

"I'd never seen anything like that ad," McCain said at the time of the spot, which was widely condemned by Democrats. Putting pictures of Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden next to the picture of a man who left three limbs on the battlefield is "worse than disgraceful," said McCain. "It's reprehensible.”

If he got that from the ad, he should watch it again too...

Here it is:

I suspect that John McCain has a far better grasp on what is reprehensible when it comes to wounded veterans than you do.

Do you have a link to McCain's original quote? I'd like to see what he actually said, not the Thinkprogress chopped up version. I can't find it anywhere.

He couldn't have found it too reprehensible...because he campaigned for Chambliss in 2008, his very next election.

Time to take this full circle, and back to the OP.

I did some reading on Max Cleland.

Here is an excerpt of the Huffington Post article on Joni Ernst:

When most people hear "combat veteran," they think firefights with the enemy. But the military defines combat veteran differently -- as soldiers who served in a combat area.

Which brings us to Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), one of the GOP's most recent stars. It was Sen. Ernst who was selected to give the Republican response to President Obama's recent State of the Union message this year.

Senator Ernst calls herself a combat veteran at every turn -- on her Senate web page, in campaign debates, and in her stump speeches. She can say this because she served in a combat zone.

And it's technically true. She was company commander of the Iowa National Guard's 1168th Transportation Company during its tour of active duty in Kuwait and southern Iraq, from February 2003 to April 2004. But the unit was never in a firefight, or for that matter attacked at all; it delivered supplies, and later, guarded the front gate and ran perimeter patrol at their home base outside Kuwait City, Camp Arifjan.

The Honor of Senator Joni Ernst Andrew Reinbach

Let's rewrite this article, as the Huffington Post, in this same vein, would have written about Max Cleland:

When most people hear "wounded veteran," they think firefights with the enemy, stepping on mines while on patrol, or mortar attacks.

Which brings us to Max Cleland, one of the liberals most recent stars...an Army veteran who was wounded grievously in the war in Vietnam

And it's technically true. Captain Cleland was injured while serving in the Battalion Signal Officer for the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division during the Battle of Khe Sanh. But Cleland wasn't injured in a firefight, or for that matter attacked at all; he was ordered to deliver a radio relay to a nearby hill, where he inadvertently picked up a live grenade accidentally dropped by a fellow soldier.
Not my opinions being expressed mind you...just carrying over the rationale from the article to a different subject. I personally have nothing but respect for either of their service.

I suspect that John McCain has a far better grasp on what is reprehensible when it comes to wounded veterans than you do.

Too bad the Military's been voting Republican for the past 3 decades. The military knows who supports them.

Jack Murtha and John Kerry. Two Democrat veterans who were both douche bags. And the military agrees.

Assumes facts not in evidence!

Military Less Republican Than You Think

3. As with the rest of the country, the younger cohorts of the military–including its officer corps–are less Republican and less conservative. See, for example, the enormous swings in attitudes on gays in the military over the last 20 years.

4. The notion that the “military vote” plays a major role in choosing our presidents is vastly overstated. In addition to the issues Lawrence notes, a third of the states essentially disenfranchise military personnel by mailing absentee ballots too late. The caveat is that, because a disproportionate number of military personnel claim Florida as their home of record in order to avoid paying state income taxes, they could potentially serve as a decisive swing vote in an incredibly close contest along the lines of the 2000 election. Those are, of course, quite uncommon.

Does the Military Vote Really Lean Republican TIME.com

But there is conflicting evidence. The Center for Responsive Politics reported last month that self-described military personnel had donated $678,611 to Obama, 85% more than the $398,450 the Romney campaign has collected.
