This might be next...with a shorter guard.

What is the attraction of an Old Hickory Knife?

Vel has it pegged... Good full tang 1095 carbon steel stamped knives at very reasonable prices.
Thanks, I’ll have to check one out

The picture does not look that impressive, but a good knife is always welcome

I usually make them into something else.

Rough sanding all done.
A lot of firsts for me here.
First hidden tang, first stack leather handle and first peened end cap.
So far, so good.

All but done. Oiled up and drying....going to get a coat or two of warm bees wax tomorrow.

I've Used The Boning Knife
As My All-Round Outdoors Knife For Over 20yrs Now
It Hones Out Hyper-Sharp
And Once The Blade Was Seasoned
It Seems Impervious To Rust
I Made A Scandinavian Style Sheath For It
Where Only An 1 1/2" Of The Handle Is Exposed

Used To Buy Them In The Utility Sections At Supermarkets
Have To Get Them On-Line Now
I Have 5 Of The 4" Paring Knives
I'm Making Bone Handles For Neck Knives For The Boys In The Family
Maybe They'll Put Down Those Damned Video Games
And Go Outside Once In A While

I Made A Scandinavian Style Sheath For It
The best sheath I've ever had is the old style Buck 103 skinner.

It hangs low on the belt with barely 1cm protruding above the belt and completely prevents the handle snagging branches or vines in this sort of bush.

Glue and back into the vice to dry.
What glue?

I used Barge between the leather, because I use it a lot for leather projects, but contact cement would work as well I think. Then 2 part Loctite 24 hour epoxy between the tang and leather, the plastic spacers and the leather, and the brass guard & end cap and leather.

  • Thanks

I certainly find hidden tang knives to be more comfortable in the hand. I think this would be my favourite style. One can use it all day without discomfort...
