Sure, its been going on for a long time, but its a tough case to prove particularly criminally. President Trump's DOJ is taking this kind of Stolen Valor crime very seriously, where people pretend to be a member of the race they aren't, and is prepared to go to any limits to prosecute them.

In this particular case, prosecutors research these defendants back to the 1850's. That's a real effort being made, particularly if someone's ancestors were in different countries.
