With those stupid rules, there was no way Ukraine could destroy Russia's war machine safely building new weapons & soldiers inside their borders. This allowed Russia to perpetually attack Ukraine without them being allowed to hit back.

Kievan regime was doomed from the very beginning, and it wasn't even supposed to survive. Its goal was simple - weaken Russia by destroying Ukraine. Now, when Ukraine is de facto destroyed and defeated the West have choice - escalate or deescalate.
