I always ask my husband, when I talk, does he hear nothing at all, or white noise?

LONDON (AFP) - Men who are accused of never listening by women now have an excuse -- women's voices are more difficult for men to listen to than other men's, a report said.

The Daily Mail, quoting findings published in the specialist magazine

NeuroImage, said researchers at Sheffield university in northern England discovered startling differences in the way the brain responds to male and female sounds.

Men deciphered female voices using the auditory part of the brain that processes music, while male voices engaged a simpler mechanism, it said.

The Mail quoted researcher Michael Hunter as saying, "The female voice is actually more complex than the male voice, due to differences in the size and shape of the vocal cords and larynx between men and women, and also due to women having greater natural 'melody' in their voices.

"This causes a more complex range of sound frequencies than in a male voice."

The findings may help explain why people suffering hallucinations usually hear male voices, the report added, as the brain may find it much harder to conjure up a false female voice accurately than a false male voice.

It's not that I don't listen. The truth is, you women mumble.

My wife can be standing next to me or be on the other end of the house. No matter where she is when she speaks to me, her first phrase will be below my hearing threshold. I've bitched at her about that to no end, but so far we've made no progress.

Did I mention we are supposed to be "mind readers"? :eek2:

Cripes. MUST there be an excuse for EVERY fault you guys have?

Too funny. In our house, we call each other Mumbles. I swear he mumbles more than I ever could.

So I assume that everyone has wished they had taped certain conversations?? :teeth:

My husband speaks Martian and being from Venus myself, I sometimes don't understand him, and vice-versa.

We've spent the last 13 years or so learning the vital points of each other's language............:kiss2:

Here's what we've learned:

1) "I don't know" from him means "I don't want to talk about it", because of course, he "knows" everything. :eek2:

2) When I'm upset about something he's learned to say "those dirty ratbastards", instead of trying to fix the situation!!!! :bang3:

And these are the two most important aspects of our communications with each other!!!

Of course, the study was done by male researchers. :tinfoil:

I have nothing against male researchers......as long as the findings are accurate. I'm more into the accuracy rather than what gender does the study. Guess I'm not as biased as some folks around here.

Yes, our voices are like our brains.........too complicated for males to comprehend. :hail: :hail:

After all, we think with both hemispheres simultaneously......and our voices have more tonal varieties that confuse the male mind......no matter which side he's using at the time.

But you seem to be smarter than the average male....running and hiding at the appropriate time!!! :fifty:

In my house it is a running joke that I am my daughters' invisible friend as nobody else in the house can seem to hear me. As there is only one other person you can guess who that might be....

So what it the women's excuse for not seeming to be able to hear the "more simplistic" (translation: more logical) voice of the males?

It's the strategic devaluation of maleness, doncha know.
