What were they recognized for, being black or women? I mean they were activated in 1945 when they sorted mail a few months before the Japs surrendered.

I doubt it, most black units were better than the average white unit, they had a lot to prove. Any minority in the forties had to prove he or she was far better than a white person to get ahead. Hell, in the forties Irish and Italians weren't considered "white" by most people although after a century of effort the Irish were getting close.
