Yes , that was part of US history in high school if you remember. When I tried to download your article it inconvientantly cutoff the payment plan. There it would have told you about the " lease " of the land. , we never bought it. One of the reasons I remember it so well was because one of the added benefits of it was a US military doctor discovered the cure for yellow fever and that has saved millions of lives worldwide ever since. An added bonus to the creation and use of the shortcut canal.

Sorry that's not what the treaty / signed agreement says it said LEASE. No where does it say sold to the US. The US had control of the land but not ownership. A second treaty further verified that fact and set the date for the land to be returned to Panama. Either we respect international.law or we do not. Hopefully we do because unlawfulness will come back on US with a vengeance if we choose to go that route.
