In 1903 the government of Panama agreed to allow the US a lease of a 10 mile wide area so they could build the Panama Canal. The US paid Panama $10 million dollars and an annual annuity of $250,000 a year begining 9 years after ratification of the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty. It gave the US the right to build , control and defend the zone, which ended in 1999.
