Yes and no. A "democracy", in the modern sense of the word, is a republic in which the public has limited influence on decision making, legitimizes the government in elections and checks government power.
Some democratic systems are better at forming and transmitting public will than others.

Well, Trump was diselected, yet attempted to overturn the election result and staying in power, by staging a coup that almost resulted in a totalitarian mob murdering elected officials in the Congress. That's what usually happens in banana republics.
