If that's true, why isn't she at school teaching instead of showing us all just how much more she is interested in herself than in her profession?

What is the average income of public school teachers in California and what is the value of their benefit packages? Pension packages? How many days per year do they actually work?

I seem to recall that in school, I took a whole lot of days off for every holiday that's written on the calendar, long weekends for Thanksgiving and Easter, a week or two off for Christmas and, of course, Summer vacation.

In the real world, vacation is more limited, benefits are more limited and pensions are a thing of the past.

In light of all this, how have the test scores of students in the California system fared vs the test scores of their counterparts in the other industrialized nations over the last 40 years? Against those scores of the Parochial students in California over the same period.

What is the cost to educate one student in California Public Schools compared to the rest of the Industrialized World and to the California Parochial School students?

This is not simply a discussion of income for teachers. It's a cost benefit ratio and there needs to be some kind of review of the outcomes, not just the injustice of making these folks work for a living.

This is a tad removed from reality. Of course they have a right to stand with their peers and should have done so on a day off from school and, when they are scheduled to be at work, should be there.

This is not complicated stuff. It's pretty basic. They are paid to perform a function which they are doing with constantly decreasing effectiveness compared to their "peers" who are working in other countries. Also compared too their "peers" who are working for less in Private Schools.

By participating in an illegal strike and ignoring their responsibilities and getting paid, they are teaching our children the wrong lessons. Again.

If they are capable of shame, they should be ashamed.

Sometimes reality just has to become a part of the conversation. The average per cap income of people living in Wisconsin, most of whom have been educated by the noble teachers of the public education system, is $36,822 and droppping.

It is from this pool that the taxes will be drawn to provide the income of the teachers that is about 42% higher than the average and rising. Throw in the generous time off for vacations and the plumb benefits and pensions and the difference balloons moreso.

In the face of a recession that is literally putting families on the street, the greed and averice of the Union mentality teachers who will gladly abandon their assigned duties to increase the weight on the shoulders of their neighbors is shameful.

Add to this mix that as recently as 20 years ago, the USA ranked first in many categories of education and now hardly cracks the top 10 in any category and languishes in the 20's and 30's in most meaningful acedemic measures.

We can be consoled by the loyalty of the tenured teachers to the union.

The teachers I know spend their own money to supply students needs.

In part due to the fact that the more the unions suck out of the districts budgets with unsustainable benefits, the less money goes into the classrooms. And that's a fact. A big part of why the districts don't have the money is a direct result of the unions. That too is a fact. Enough is enough.

Those teachers in Wisconsin pull in between 45-75 g's a year with excellent benefit and pension plans. They can definitely afford the concessions the governor is asking for. No doubt about it.......It's time these people come in line with the private sector who are having to also dig a lil' deeper into their pockets these days......There is NOTHING special about those union employees whatsoever. They are just the same as everybody else who work just as hard in the private sector. It's time they start realizing it.

it appears to me that unions, teachers Unions, bus drivers whomever seem to think its perfectly alright for their next door neighbor to take it in the neck and get laid off BUT, they somehow deserve to dance between the raindrops, going so far as to protest that the very people who help pay their salaries don't have the plans they do AND in the end don't have near the job security they do, and are not even willing to put up 12% of their medical plan premium costs.....unreal.
