In comparision, I can see they are more or less the same. I understand the point AJ is trying to make with reference to the verse, although it also seems like something that can be interpreted differently depending on ones motives. If you go on to read the next verse (61) the tone changes.

I'm in no way an expert, but it sounds like Muslims are supposed to respond/deal with non-Muslims the same way they are being treated - an eye for an eye so to speak. Is that accurate?

62. And if they intend to deceive you, then verily, Allâh is All-Sufficient for you. He it is Who has supported you with His Help and with the believers.
63. And He has united their (i.e. believers') hearts. If you had spent all that is in the earth, you could not have united their hearts, but Allâh has united them. Certainly He is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

You are right and everyone should take the entire Sura into a full understanding of the words of Pbuh Muhammad.

Your verses indicate that the Muslim must use steeds (all the Infidel inventions of steel tanks, planes, missiles, arterillery) and fight the ENEMY OF ALLAH (all unbelievers or infidels). But he says that if they incline to peace then the Muslim must so incline to peace.

That is not exactly what the Muslim terrorists of the world are doing. The world has lived in peace with Islam until the believers in Allah found that peace was not getting them back to the power over the infidels nor was it making them convert to Allah and Pbuh Muhammad.

Is that why Islam attacks the peaceful nations who were not at war with Islam until 09/11? When did the United States, Russia, Israel, Phillipean Island, Sudan, Spain or any other country start a war against Allah and Islam?

NEVER.......

So now Islam fights the enemies of Allah and Pbuh Muhammad. When the infidels fight back and protect their children and women from suicide bombers in schools, buses, World Trade Towers, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, the Muslim DON'T LIKE WHEN THEY HAVE STIRRED UP A HORNETS NEST OF THE UNBELIEVERS and strike back at Islam.

Sura 9:5

Refers to all unbelievers of Muhammad being the enemy and that mankind must convert to this peaceful religion or be slain from ambush in a terrorist war.

To me, it reminds me of a guide of sorts to stay in power. Promise rewards to those who stay and fight, threats of death and torture to those who stray and mingle with non-believers who could have influence on the subjects thoughts. Convert as many as you can, and kill those who threaten the kingdom. Isn't the first verse is referring to a time when all non-believers had been expelled, and all treaties with other nations had been abloshed? "Islamic Manifesto" comes to mind.
